Re: [movies-579] More movies at our place?

I assume that the third film you're referring to is "The Legend is Born: Ip Man", which is about the same historical person, but is by a different director with a different actor playing the titular Ip Man (though it does have Sammo Hung in a supporting role, who was also the action choreographer and supporting actor in Ip Man 2). But since this was made by a different production team, most people don't consider this to really be a sequel or part of the same series.

That said, I'm totally with you on Ip Man, it's such an awesome film. I'll keep that in mind for the future. Perhaps closer to when "Grandmasters" comes out. Might be interesting to compare/contrast.

If you haven't heard of Grandmasters, it's the newest film by Wong Kar Wai, among a number of other great films, he's the director of Chungking Express (from my original email and a personal favorite) and In the Mood for Love (ranked 24 in the 2012 Sight & Sound critic's best films of all time list, one of only two movies from the 2000s to break the top 50). I mention this because like "Ip Man", Grandmasters is also a biopic based on the life of the historical Ip Man. It's certainly among my most anticipated films for this year.

I've never heard of any of those movies but my favorite is 'ip man'. It's a martial arts movie based on the humble and amazing trainer of Bruce lee. Bruce lee has nothing to do with the film but even if u don't like martial arts its a good movie. It's a series, I haven't seen the 3rd part tho (which is a prequel, played by a younger actor). If u play it i will come... Lol. I can't see it enough.

So, those that I've run into at recent events have heard me mention that Alyssa and I are looking to host more events at our place. We had an idea for a Before Sunrise/Before Sunset double feature, however, at this point, we have no idea when Before Midnight (which rounds out the trilogy) is going to hit near here (starts in NY/LA on May 24th).

That said, I'm curious what sort of movies folks would be interested in seeing more of. Dan seems to have new US releases fairly well covered, so we probably wouldn't overlap. Folks that have chatted with me for any length of time I'm sure are aware that my wife and I have fairly wide ranging tastes in film.

Would more Hollywood classics be appreciated? Cult classics? More foreign and independent? Documentary features (film related or otherwise)?

The fallback of course, is simply the "films Chris and Alyssa want more people to see" category (ie., great movies that we think are underseen). To give you an idea of what that might look like, these are some films we've done for previous movie nights in the last 6 months or so (for Meetup or otherwise), Take Shelter (2011), Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012), Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2012).

And films we've often talked about wanting to show more people, Chungking Express (1994), M (1931), The Tree of Life (2011), the aforementioned Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2003), Kieslowski's Three Colors Trilogy [masked]). I could go on, but you probably get the idea.

What do you all think?

PS. Chungking Express in particular, I was thinking might be good for May 31st (if you've seen the film, you should get it, if not, then you'll need to see it) ;)
