Separate from Dan’s trip, here are some other ways to support Habitat for Humanity in general:

http://www.habitatmwgw.org/ — is our local Habitat for Humanity website, has info on donating and volunteering
http://www.habitatmwgw.org/restore/ — the ReStore is a home improvement donation center they run. Prices can be really good, and all proceeds to go Habitat for Humanity
http://smile.amazon.com — Amazon has just started a program where, at no cost to you or the charity, they will donate 0.5% of your Amazon purchases to a charity of your choice. Once you’ve selected a charity, just make sure to start your Amazon shopping from http://smile.amazon.com. Our local Habitat for Humanity is listed as "Habitat for Humanity Metrowest - Greater Worcester Inc”. I’ve personally designated Love146 (dedicated to ending Child Sex Slavery and Exploitation) as my charity of choice.

Also, for those looking for other giving opportunities, I’ve found Charity Navigator a great resource for checking out non-profits before donating. To ensure they’re making good use of your money.

And to bring this a little bit back to film. Has anyone seen “El Norte” (1983)? Or any other Guatemalan film for that matter? Maybe we could do a screening + send-off for Dan’s trip.

Hi Dan,

I have been on here for about  a year and I finally found something that is truly remarkable. This is not intended to put down the meetups, but this is truly above it all. I intend to donate and I would definitely like to know how I can get more involved with this and any other similar movement.

Subject: [movies-579] please pardon this brief but important plea

Hello Movie Meetup Group friends,
I know this has nothing to do with movies but since I know many of you through the meetups but don't have everyone's personal email addresses, I felt this was an easy and useful way to make a small request.

I will be travelling with a group to rural Guatemala to take part in a team house build project through Habitat For Humanity.  We will spend a full week working 8-hour days, building a new house for a family in need.  Since we are quickly approaching the fundraising deadline, I felt I should submit this humble plea for any donation you can make, small or large.

I truly believe that periodically sacrificing some of my time, money, and physical labor for those less privileged than myself is a non-negotiable part of my existence that is spiritually replenishing, compassionately contagious, and evermore necessary in an increasingly polarized world such as ours. Each individual project or donation may seem insignificant, no match for the problems humanity faces. But I believe that everything is interconnected, and kindness begets more kindness, snowballing into a better world moment by moment. I plan on doing some form of humanitarian work once a year for as long as I live, and if you haven't tried it I highly recommend it!

But even if you've been unable to and may not be able to embark on such an endeavor, and want to make a difference no matter how small, here's your chance! You can rest assured knowing that anything you give will go directly toward the cost of my trip (We have to pay upwards of $2,000 including the trip fees and airfare), and I will use all of your generosity as inspiration to dig a little deeper (literally!) in that Central American soil and give it my all.

Thank you so much!
-Dan
