Got busy, just closed the vote, thank you for the responses.

My wife and I have settled on Dec. 17th for the next discussion. I’ll post the event(s) later today, along with a poll to decide on a film for discussion. We’ll let that run for two weeks, then you’ll have two weeks to watch the film before the discussion. I’ll post a separate event for just open discussion, for those that don’t get a chance to see the film ahead of time.

My biggest (and slightly unexpected) takeaway from the poll is that I should try to avoid Hulu Plus *only* releases.

That said, due to their partnership with the Criterion Collection, I’d actually personally advocate for getting on board with Hulu Plus. The Criterion Collection has a *huge* selection of classic world cinema, and well, as their motto states, “important” films. As an example, ~1/3 of the BFI top 50 films of all time are available for streaming via this partnership. See http://www.criterion.com/hulu for a full list of their streaming titles.

Anyway, as interesting as some of those titles are, I won’t select any Hulu Plus *only* releases, if I select one of those, I’ll make sure it’s available via at least one other method as well. Which (for now anyway) rules out Touki Bouki (1973 Senegalese film), The Housemaid (1960 S. Korean film), and other films recently restored by the World Cinema Foundation, made available via Criterion/Hulu Plus.

As I try to determine the selections to vote on the the next movie discussion, it'd be helpful to have a snapshot of the services people already use or are willing to subscribe to. I have a guess how this is going to turn out, but I may be surprised...

I’ve set up a poll here to get collect some feedback on this: http://www.meetup.com/movies-579/polls/948512/

For reference, Netflix and Hulu Plus* are $7.99 per month each for their streaming services. Amazon Prime is $80 per year.

*Some movies are free w/ ads on "regular" Hulu, but many (especially Criterion Collection films) require a Hulu Plus subscription.

I’ll make the choices by the weekend, so, please don’t wait to vote, it should only take a minute.

Thanks!

PS. I’m glad I ran this poll first, didn’t realize that the poll descriptions aren’t formatted (and even strip out line breaks).

Hey all,

I wanted to send a message to the general list about last night’s Meetup. Overall, the consensus seems to be that it went very well, and we definitely want to do it again. We also discussed a plan for future such Meetups that I think the whole group should be aware of.

One big item that came out during the discussion is simply that we want to stretch our film knowledge and push our boundaries. We discussed a number of films and areas that we consider “blind spots” of our film knowledge that we’d like to explore together. In particular, people mostly expressed interest in exploring more older film, and more foreign film (particularly from countries other than France or Japan).

Here’s the plan so far:

1. I’m going to schedule another film discussion Meetup for ~a month away.
2. I’ll pick three films, and we’ll run a poll for ~2 weeks to decide which film we’ll watch/discuss. I’ll make sure that all choices are available for Instant Streaming (ie., Netflix/Hulu/etc) and/or available from the local library system (though not necessarily both).
3. Folks will then have ~2 weeks to watch the film on their own time, and then we’ll get together to discuss the film.

I’m actually planning to set up the discussion as two separate Meetups, one right after the other. One will be to discuss the featured film chosen as per above, and the other will be for a more general discussion, similar to last night’s Meetup.

That said, if anyone has suggestions for films and/or discussion topics to consider, please let me know. I have my own ideas, so suggestions might not make it for this time around, but I’ll be compiling feedback into a spreadsheet for future discussions.
