"Vitaphone Varieties" (1927-31)

Various directors, USA, 110 min.

Produced to show off the capability of Warner Brothers' disc-based Vitaphone system, these early sound shorts provide a priceless record of the leading vaudeville, Broadway, and Tin Pan Alley performers of the day. The eleven films in the program include composer Joseph E. Howard singing his standard "I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now," Tex McLeod doing rope tricks, Red Nichols and His Five Pennies performing "Ida, Sweet as Apple Cider," Pat O'Brien trying to go straight in the mini-drama CRIMES SQUARE, and Helen Morgan torching her way through the offbeat comedy THE GIGOLO RACKET. 35mm.--Siskel Center guide
