General Film Discussion Brunch

  • September 22, 2013 · 11:30 AM

Between the doldrums of summer and the fall's festival season, it's time to convene at the Fat Cat for a General Film Discussion Brunch, where any and all movie topics are welcome to be brought up!  Some of the things we'll be talking about could be:

* Duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh....BATFFLECK!!  There are so many angles to the craziest casting decision since Nic Cage was considered for Superman.  Will his directoral talent induce a good performance, or will "Superman vs. Ben Affleck" doom superhero movies into the Phantom Zone?  And how will Kevin Smith sneak his way into the picture?

* One of the more amazing Hollywood turnarounds was Affleck's transformation from mediocre actor to remarkable director.  Apparently he was the start of a trend - Toronto showcased films by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Mike Myers, Jason Bateman, James Franco, and John Turturro ("Fading Gigolo" - starring Woody Allen as a pimp!)  What are your favorite movies where actors took on directing (and vice versa)?

* Speaking of Toronto and other fests, there looks to be a great collection of films making their premieres, from "12 Years a Slave" to "August: Osage County", from "Gravity" to "All is Lost".  What are the films you're most looking forward to this autumn?

* For the re-release of "The Little Mermaid" (now starring Ben Affleck as Sebastian the crab), Disney has come up with the brilliantly asinine idea of encouraging people to bring their iPads to use during the movie!   In the spirit of ruining movie-watching, we can relate our favorite stories of awful audience behavior (some of which ended up accidentally improving the film being watched!)

Drop on by the brunch to talk over these subjects, or any other film ideas or suggestions that come to mind.  It's all open discussion (or in Batffleck's case, open season) at the Fat Cat!

Excellent Meetup at the Fat Cat (who had our seating location all set up - including with a poster greeting!). The conversation went all over the place, but gravitated along gritty 70's film, and we had some sweet discursions on the works of Frederick Wiseman, Sam Fuller, Larry Cohen, and Sidney Lumet. Some of the films we talked about were:

    "Run of the Arrow"
"At Berkeley" (coming up at the International Film Fest)!
    "The Frisco Kid"
    "Deep Red"
    "The Stuff"
    "White Dog"
"The Host" (The 2006 Korean monster movie, not the monstrous 2012 "Twilight" writer's movie!)
    "Belfast, Maine"
    "The Steel Helmet"
"Kiss of Death" (The good 1947 one, not the Caruso 1995 one!!)
    "Sweet Sweetback's Badass Song"
    "The Pawnbroker"
    "Rolling Thunder"
    "The Verdict"
    "The Naked Kiss"

The schedule for the 2013 Chicago International Film Festival is out!

One of the highlights of this year's fest is a tribute to documentary legend Errol Morris on 10/23, along with airing his latest film, "The Unknown Known". From a glance, some of the other films to look out for include:

    "12 Years a Slave"
    "Blue is the Warmest Color"
    "Inside Llewyn Davis"
Retrospective looks at "Amarcord" and "Medium Cool"

We'll bring a printed copy of the schedule to the Meetup - it'll be great to hear what films you're looking forward to seeing at the fest!

Surprise surprise! Kevin Smith has opinions (LOTS of opinions) on Battfleck in his "Fatman on Batman" podcast:
