I did a little reading on the "Alford Plea" last night when I got home. It comes from the case of North Carolina v Alford. Alford would have been subject to the death penalty if he pleaded not guilty and was then found guilty by the jury. So he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, but still maintained that he was innocent. He did NOT go free, as in our movie! But the question was whether it was possible to plead guilty while still claiming you were innocent. It finally went to the Supreme Court, where it was decided that it was valid. Wikipedia article here: I also found an article about the movie in the Business Insider that said - contrary to what I said last night - that the DA could still charge someone additional in the murder of the three boys, even though the three men had already pled guilty:

Tentative "yes" - pretty sure we'll be there, but things are a bit up in the air.
