Byzantium - Needs an event host !!!

As per message and email Frankie can no longer attend tonight which means that the meetup needs coordinating. Please change your rsvp if you are no longer attending.

Those that can still make it - use the meetup point at the top of the escalator and get tickets (aim for B14 seat) beforehand. Sorry I had to cancel my appearance at such short notice...

This time is now definite @ 8:50 which means a start time of about 9:20 and at 110 minutes that means the movie will finish at 11:10 I hope that suits people ok.

Neil Jordan is of course the director of Interview With The Vampire, and returns to that genre with Byzantium, which stars Gemma Arterton and one of my favourite young actresses, Saoirse Ronan. As mother and daughter vampirette they are hiding out at the seaside from The Brotherhood (of vampires) who disapprove of their very existence and I assume are lead by Jonny Lee Miller. Sam Riley is also in this but not sure what his role is.

Empire magazine gives this 8/10 and describes it as mixture of the wistful and the brutal, and a melancholic, strange picture.

I think that if you're into musing darkly on your lot in life without much light relief then you may get something out of this film. People with supernatural powers always find them a burden. At least the mother seemed to get some pleasure out of being a vampire. Daughter vampire just seemed to feel whole thing too much for her, or is that just common place with teenagers? Lots of 'I'll tell you my story..' with long stretches of piano music... This wasn't 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'. I don't know much about other vampire films to compare. But I'm still glad I came, thank you for suggesting it. Good cast, though. The actor from Rev (if anybody watches that) turns up.

No problem. Shame you couldn't make it despite going to all the trouble to organise it! I look forward to the next time.

Poor film: it lacked momentum. Drab and dull. The special effects simply were not 'special' enough. Even the dripping blood lacked depth; it had no density and I likened it to the sickly strawberry syrup that can be poured over ice cream. I thought it was a waste of a Saturday night.

This was a pretty bad film, however I still quite enjoyed it in a strange way. Strange being the most appropriate word for it.

Nice to see the small group of us that made it!

As per my email I'm afraid I must cancel my attendance tonight I have the chance to get my car fixed if I go over to Shipley this evening, which is too good an opportunity to miss. Can I ask Kate and Mags to try to coordinate the group. Please change your rsvp if you cannot attend. I've emailed everyone. Sorry folks!

Just to be clear you should ask for seat B14 or as close to it as possible this is the second road from the back eg A14 or B15 so we can sit together.

It depends on why they gave it 2 marks. Interview With The Vampire was a decent film , so not a problem with the direction?

Hello, I'm new. I thought about going to the event on Monday evening but I didn't. I think Saturday is much more likely. This film was reviewed on Radio 4 yesterday and it seemed positive. Looking forward to it. Elaine
