Grayson Lake – Kayaking and Camping Memorial Day Weekend

If you enjoy sheer beauty, this paddle is for you.  Grayson Lake is by far one of the best lake paddling destinations in our area. This time of year is by far the best time to see and experience the many waterfalls in this wonderful park. This place is beautiful and the waterfalls are spectacular. But, you have to get there at the right time of year and May is waterfall season.  Lets hope for some rain prior to our arrival to make the show even more spectacular.

This is a paddling, car camping, hiking and just chill out weekend.  The only scheduled paddle is on Sunday.  All other activities are on your own.  We have been to Carter Caves State Park and Grayson Lake State Park numerous times and assure you there is a wealth of recreational opportunity that I am certain you will enjoy. Hiking, horseback riding, kayaking, cave tours, boating, and swimming are just a few activities awaiting you. We invite you to get out and enjoy the many wonders these eastern Kentucky parks have to offer with us. If you are not a camping type, no problem, I have listed options in the listing below that you may find a place to lay your head at the end of the day.

Waterfalls, rock formations, wildlife

• Food
We will have lunch on the water.  Bring plenty of food, water and snacks.

THE CAMPING

We are camping in the primitive camp section of Carter Caves State Park.  You are responsible for your site reservation with Carter Caves State Park. We are camping in the Bunkhouse 1 loop.  Try to reserve your site nearby as we will have pot luck dinner on both Saturday and Sunday evenings.  If you prefer to share a site, please post on the event discussion area and coordinate this on your own.  We are arriving Friday evening and leaving Monday afternoon.

What a great weekend.. great weather.. great company and the paddling was alot of fun. The beauty of Grayson Lake is just stunning. Going through that tiny cave passage to the "secret grotto" is one of the coolest things I've ever experienced or have even seen. Glad I made the trip, it was great spending the weekend with some friends and some old & new acquaintances. Thanks Kenny .. Thanks Kimberly!!

Where is the put-in at Grayson? I am thinking of coming down for the day. Seems due to miscommunication the camping spot was lost. :(

I am planning on doing a potluck dinner BOTH Saturday and Sunday nights. If you would like to participate, please list below what you would like to bring so we don't have 5 dishes of baked beans LOL. I also have some other friends attending so I will also post below what they plan to bring.

John Hunt Morgan Bed & Breakfast has 3 open rooms. This is very nearby. I have stayed there before. $79.50 a night which includes breakfast each morning. Just thought I would throw this out there for anyone wanting to go down that would prefer a soft place to lay your head and a warm breakfast in the morning :0)

    May 20, 2014

  • Kenny

Anyone want to carpool down with me on Friday? I am on my own this weekend and have a truck with a roof rack and seating for 4.

    May 20, 2014

  • Kimberly

I always make a pot of coffee in the morning. The only thing I usually bring to put in it is Non-Dairy Creamer. If you like something else, please bring it.

Will we be parking our cars there and returning to the same spot?

      May 19, 2014

    • Kimberly

There is a boat ramp off Rt.7. We will try to put a couple of kayaks in my truck bed to have more parking room at the boat ramp.

      May 19, 2014

  • Kimberly

I will post directions from the Dayton, Ohio and Northern Kentucky areas later tonight. Just an FYI...DON'T USE A GPS if you drive down the AA Highway. YOU WILL get LOST!

  • SpongeBob

How many spots are available? I decided to attend and I know of a couple others who are interested too. I/we certainly want to join in on the fun, campsite and contribute to the Potluck meals. Please let us know ASAP. Grayson lake is about 133 miles directly south of Columbus down Rt 23 into KY. From Dayton, maybe you will take Rt 35 east to Rt 23 South?

    May 19, 2014

    • Kenny

We will squeeze you in Bob. Just bring a small tent.

      May 19, 2014

  • MaryKay

Will we be getting the directions soon... I need to figure out my travel time whether I can make it in before dark Friday night or leave really early Sat morn.. I'm thinking about 3 1/2 hrs travel for me but then it seemed like it was a lot longer than that the last time. I'm coming from south Dayton.

  • Kenny

Depending on water levels and ability to shuttle, I am interested in paddling Tygart Creek again this year. I would like to launch at the I-64 overpass and takeout at the Carter Caves park entrance. This would be a Saturday paddle. I have ran this river before in the ice and snow of January and it is stunning. Anyone interested in an impromptu paddle on Saturday, post up.

    April 8, 2014

    • MaryKay

Hey Kenny .. if the water level is a go for this paddle.. do you have an approx start timeframe that you are thinking of? Thanks

      May 18, 2014

    • Kenny

I am feeling a 10ish start is a good time. Pack a lunch and we will eat on the river.

I definitely want to try to make that weekend work for doing this... have to double check with my daughter to make sure she isn't planning on coming here or me up to Lake Erie. Was down there a few years back and couldn't believe a place so beautiful was so close by. I missed seeing the waterfalls because it was in the fall and had been wanting to go back since. I'm presuming the bunkhouse will be available again.. it's either that or sleeping in the back of my car.

    April 5, 2014

    • MaryKay

If it's still available, I'll take it. Check your email

I plan on hiking on Saturday. Sunday's paddle will be on Grayson Lake. However, we will play it by ear depending on the weather.
