Kayak Dayton - Great Miami River "Weekday Paddle Series" Franklin to Middletown

  • May 27, 2014 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Enjoy short and leisurely after work paddle on the Great Miami River. At only 5 miles, its a good way to get on the water close to home and stretch your arms.  This is a fun section that I am sure you will enjoy.

We will paddle 5 miles from new boat ramp just south of Franklin [GM 59.2] to an area just north of Middletown [GM 54.2] on The Great Miami River. There is not a livery for boat rental or a shuttle. You will need to own your own boat and be willing to shuttle with other kayakers on this Meet Up.  If you do not have a boat, local rental information is included below.

We will meet at the  6:30 PM at the launch area and agree on shuttle logistics.  We will prepare boats for launch and a group will stage vehicles for shuttle at the take out location. Plan to arrive 15-20 minutes before. If you are running late, please call. I will provide my cell number once RSVP's close.

• Start
We will push of from the shoreline at 6:45 PM

• Finish
We should be out of the water 8:15 PM + or -

• Duration
Expect to spend about 1.5 hours on the water

• Pace
We will take a leisurely paddle giving plenty of time for camera opportunities

• Distance
This paddle is 5 miles

• Difficulty
This paddle is suitable for paddlers with some moving water experience.  You must be 18 years of age or older and sign the liability waiver.  Its not a hard paddle, however there are obstacles to maneuver.

• What You See
Franklin train trestle , confluence of Twin Creek, paddle over the washed out dam at Middletown,  Wildlife.

• Restrooms
There are no restrooms available

• Food
Bring water and snacks.  We will have dinner after the paddle at TJ Chumps.

A boat that tracks well would be ideal, but not necessary.  Mostly a flat water paddle with an occasional rapid.  A recreational boat will do well.

• What to Bring
PFD / hat / water / sunscreen / bug spray / dry clothes / dry shoes / dry bag / safety equipment. Water temperatures will be cool.  Be prepared. Bring a towel as to respect the vehicle owner in which you share a shuttle.

PLEASE NOTE: This is the first time I have attempted to paddle this waterway this year.  I am not your guide.  I am a friend to paddle with that has provided you with group companionship and shuttling opportunity.

• Take State route 73 exit

• West on ST RT 73 (2nd street) towards Franklin

• As you enter town (Speedway gas station) continue straight to East 2nd street.

• Cross the Great Miami River on the Franklin lion bridge

• Turn left at light immediately after crossing bridge
(Miami Ave/also known as Oxford Road)

• Boat ramp is about 3/4 miles on the left.  Limited parking available.

Great meeting everyone tonight. Had a lot of fun.
Any interest in doing West Carrollton to Miamisburg next Tueday night? Also about a 5 mile paddle. Slighty challenging put in point just below the West Carrollton dam but easy take out at the new Miamisburg boat ramp at Linden Ave (west side of river)

Hey, Kenny, I have to drop out. My sister and I had so much fun yesterday saving Lego Middle Earth from evil that she decided to stay another night. Have fun! Hope the weather holds up for you.
