THE PADDLE

We are paddling 19.5 miles from Dennison Ferry to Houchins Ferry on the beautiful Green River in western Kentucky.  Do not RSVP for this event unless you have read the event description in its entirety and are[masked]% positive you will attend.

Saturday
We will want to get an early start so we can get a decent river campsite! We will need to do a 45 mile shuttle and will also need to stop at the Visitor's Center to pick up our FREE Backcountry Passes for the weekend. So waky, waky sunshine!

The first 10-12 miles of the Green River has some current. We will find a place to camp along the Green River.  Please bring a small backpack style tent!

Sunday
The paddle will be about 10+ miles.  There is little to no current.

• Start
We will push of from the shoreline at 10:30 AM + or - on Saturday

• Finish
We should be out of the water 2:30 PM + or - on Sunday

• Duration
Expect to spend 2 full days on the water

• Pace
We will take a leisurely paddle giving plenty of time for camera opportunities

• Distance
This paddle is 19.5 miles

• Difficulty
This paddle is suitable for paddlers with some moving water experience.  You must be 18 years of age or older and sign the liability waiver.  Its not a hard paddle, however it is a long paddle and there are obstacles to maneuver.

The beautiful Green River and Mammoth Cave National Park, dramatic bluffs, majestic trees, and wildlife.

• Restrooms
There are no restrooms available.

• Food
Bring enough food, water and snacks for the duration of the event.

•-Equipment
A boat that tracks well would be ideal. Anything from a 12' crossover to a 14'  lake boat will work fine.  Many long and flat sections to paddle.

• What to Bring
PFD / hat / water / sunscreen / bug spray / dry clothes / dry shoes / dry bags / safety equipment/ extra paddle / your food/snacks and your smile / etc....

We will be camping out of our kayak's so pack like you are going on a backpacking trip. If you are uncertain how to do this, this paddle may not be for you.

THE CAMPING

We will be camping out of our car on Friday night and camping out of our kayak Saturday night.  You must be prepared to camp with backpacker level experience and equipment to attend this event.

Event host will arrive early Friday evening to try to get tent campsites at the Houchins Ferry Campground.  This campground has only 12 sites, and they are equipped with picnic tables, fire grates, chemical toilets, fresh water, and an adjacent picnic shelter.  There are no showers!

If we are unable to secure sites a Houchins Ferry Campground, our backup plan will be to use the Mammoth Cave Main Campground.

You are required to share in the cost of the campsites. We plan on getting 2 sites.  Houchins Ferry is $12.00 a night, Mammoth Cave is 17.00.

IMPORTANT: Check this MEETUP site on Friday 25th for an update on which campsite is  reserved for our group. Read more: http://www.gorp.com/parks-guide/travel-ta-mammoth-cave-national-park-paddling-kentucky-sidwcmdev_067418.html#ixzz35QFNDz19

When you get the chance, return at least five pounds of sand back to KY. You can drop it off in Covington.

Seeing a yearling Bald Eagle perched on a branch 4 feet off the water and paddling within 20' was remarkable. Seeing and hearing it take flight, soaring majestically over the river was a spectacular once in a lifetime experience! Seeing Kimberly win the wet t-shirt contest was...

For the group that is leaving on Thursday, we could do a cave tour on Friday. Who's in? BTW...if we do a tour, we will be close to the bath house. I will plan on taking a shower Friday before we head back to our campsite at Houchins. I believe it costs 2 or 3 dollars for something like 4 minutes.

Kenny, aren't you the leader of the trip? If not you then who? No other person is mentioned on the website.

      July 23

    • Kenny

Event host is Kimberly. I am the site organizer. I know, it's confusing. Email Kimberly is you need. I tend to stay out of these decisions and defer to those that are leading the event.

Hi all. I found this link helpful since I'm a newbie kayak camper and don't want to forget something. There is a gear checklist you can print also. I'm looking forward to this weekend! See you all soon.

Food options near Houchins Ferry. Subway for Breakfast or Dinner, Dairy Queen, and the Mint Mart has Godfather's Pizza and O'Deli's. I bet we can find coffee there also :-)

Thanks Kimberly! Kenny and I were just discussing food for the trip last night and were wondering what options there might be. We are up for exploring new areas, so date night sounds good:)
