Several members have contacted me about paddling the Mad River this weekend, so I thought I would go ahead and suggest this trip for Sunday. Monday is also a possibility. Saturday is out for me as I will be attending a bird/hike at the new Big Darby Headwaters Nature Preserve up by the Honda plant. If you are into birding and would like to join us, here is a link for that Meetup event. http://www.meetup.com/Ohio-Nature-Conservancy-Meetup-Group/events/66138072/
I prefer paddling the section of the Mad that hardly ever gets used which runs from West Liberty down to the Lippincott Rd access. So what I suggest we do is paddle from West Liberty down to Birch Bark Canoe Livery. Its a 10 mile trip and there is a charge for parking at the livery. I believe its $5 if I'm not mistaken. Lets plan on meeting at the put in located just south of West Liberty (see map) at 9am where we will unload our boats. Then we can drive down to the livery and park our vehicles there and carpool back to the put in site. Parking is very limited at the put in which is why I suggest meeting at the put in first.
If you've never paddled the Upper Mad, its an awesome paddle! The water levels are always good and the river is spring fed so the water temps stay a constant 56 degrees all year round. The upper section from West Liberty to Lippincott Rd is really, really nice! Very shady and I doubt we'll see any other boaters either. Trust me, you will love this trip!
Plan on being on the water for about 4 hours. We should be on the water by 10am. Bring a sack lunch, plenty of water, bug spray, a wide brimmed hat and sunscreen. High temps are going to be in the mid 90's, but dont fret it! We can always take a dip in the cool, clear waters of the Mad and quickly cool off! If you would like more info, please feel free to call me at[masked]-4737. Randall.
As the folks at Birch Bark Canoe Livery say.... Hope to see you on the river!
