Kayak under Red White and Boom & have fun!!

Several of us have done this for years and always a great time more of a picnic than a paddle but guaranteed fun. Meet in the parking lot at the very West end of Nationwide Blvd. Easy parking for kayakers and easy exit ( thus far I've been able to get home within 20 minutes). Yes, do bring your kayak flashlight and whistle and registration, every boat is inspected before allowed to enter water. Bring picnic basket and all those other necessities of a party and I'm sure someone will bring a grill. Typically have a land party and then within an hour of fireworks enter water and paddle down stream for a spectacular show! Parking lot is semiprivate compared to the rest of downtown Columbus.

If you don't have a Kayak but are interested in going contact Columbus Outdoor Pursuits, for the last couple of years they have been renting kayaks for this event but contact them early they go fast.

Directions: From 33 or Spring st. North on Hocking St. West on Nationwide Blvd till it dead ends.

Parking!!

In the past we have not had a problem with parking ........ but...... more and more are finding are little secret parking space and if Cota goes on strike it can make those few parking spots scarce so If possible try to share a ride, double up, triple up, pack that vehicle tight with people & kayaks........you get the idea.

For those who haven't gone before traffic can be interesting just getting there, roads start getting closed and the only way I've been able to get in is coming in from the West going East on long street and make a left on Hocking and another left on Nationwide Blvd. Cops have had road closed but if you have a kayak on top or tell them your going to boat ramp they will let you through.

You should bring:

Food

Water

flashlight - any flashlight will pass

registration

PFD - if your over 16 you do not have to wear it on water but will have to have it with you.

folding chair

I met alot of very nice people. We ate, talked and laughed!
I did not have a boat. I saw that a couple people posted that they had extra, but alas...no boat for Jan. I also left a bag of chips a sentimental old and a pillow near Scott's vehicle. I will be purchsing a kayak within the next 2 weeks! Yay me!
I left and met long time friends for a drink. Great day and evening for me.

I'm sorry that we didn't arrive in time to actually meet up - couldn't quite figure our which group was which. But I appreciated all the tips and discussion beforehand. I can't believe I've missed this experience for so many years. It was incredible!

WOW. The RSVPs keep rolling in. There were ~8 of us last year when this was announced only on the message boards. If most people are planning to cook out, my little table top grill is going to be too small. One or two more would be helpful if you have one.

Parking gets tight. There will be many other paddlers besides our group and some non-paddlers figure out there is a parking lot hidden back there at the end of the street. Get there as early as possible. We have no idea what's going to happen due to the COTA strike. There may be a lot more people driving downtown instead of using the bus. Worst case, drop your boats in the parking lot and park down the street elsewhere.

    July 3, 2012

  • Bonnie R.

how is the parking in this area? plenty of space for all the paddlers?

    Rob and Mary and Cindy,
That route won't cross closed streets, but I can't account for the traffic. The earlier the better. I'll be down there by 4:30. Look for the Paddle Ohio sign on my windshield.

ok....I will be coming from the Mansfield area, GPS is sending me 71 south to 670, exit 3 for Goodale toward Neil and then right onto Dublin ave/w nationwide blvd. From past experience will this work with road closings

Any problems going 71 south to 670 to goodale to neil to Nationwide?

    July 2, 2012

  • JoEllen H.

Also guys if you look up RED White and Boom on the internet ther is information about road closings etc. Could be useful, I'm coming from the north west end and I read something about Spring being closed from Hocking to I think Neil. Might be worth checking out the available routes from your location. Could save some headaches.

    July 2, 2012

  • Matt G

Ali, I don't see a problem having kids there. It's certainly a lot better than them seeing some of the, uhh, interesting, people roaming around on land downtown.
Bonnie, from the Worthington area I'd come down SR-315 and then probably 670--Vine--Neil--Nationwide. If you look at a map, it's where W. Nationwide Blvd ends.

Could someone give me driving directions to the launch site from the worthington area?

    July 2, 2012

  • John

Anyone have an extra kayak or canoe? Ive done this the past few years but recently became boatless. I know COP usually has a few down there for rent but not sure how fast they will go.

Also, last year I was able to get right in and right out from Spring/Long and avoided a lot of traffic. Spring was blocked off pretty far out but the police let people through to the boat launch. I think from Clintonville to have an alternative water in hand was only like 15 minutes.

Scott, I know it probably is not necesaary, but just in case someone is counting heads....given the totallity of the circumstances (no power, weather forecast, etc) I'm withdrawing from participation in this event. I hope everyone that does attend has a good time and thanks for the invite.

    Scott:
Can you be a little more specific on your following comment:-

This is city property and technically not allowed but the rumor is that those who are discreet and don't draw attention to their activity will not be bothered all others will have overnight obligations with the city.

Bret, just have a flashlight with you. Headlamps are handy, but you won't even have the light on most of the time.

    June 29, 2012

  • Bret

Does the flashlight have to be boat mounted or is just a normal flashlight good?

    June 29, 2012

  • Matt G

Bob, generally people consider the water less than desirable for swimming.
There is a parking lot and boat ramp at the end of W Nationwide Blvd, west of Huntington Stadium. GPSers, try 636 W Nationwide Blvd, 43215.
We'll enter the Olentangy River, paddle a couple hundred yards to the Scioto and hang a left.
    INSPECTION
You will be inspected by CPD before going down the boat ramp. You will need
    PFD
    flashlight
    whistle
    boat registration
current license sticker on your boat

My Ohio boat operators guide book says sound signaling devices in kayaks are only required on Federal waters. Federal waters in Ohio are Lake Erie and connecting bays and harbors, the Ohio river and the Muskingum River.

    June 19, 2012

  • Matt G

Rob and Mary, the spot we've used is only a few feet deep. Good call JoEllen. I always carry a whistle when on the water. It's attached to my PFD so I never forget it. According to ODNR's website it doesn't appear that you have to at this location, but I remember the inspector expecting it. Better be safe and bring it.

    June 18, 2012

  • JoEllen H.

I think I remember someone saying that they were requiring whistles last year as well.

I can bring a 10# anchor. Does any one know the water depth so I dont bring all 50 feet of rope?

    June 18, 2012

  • Matt G

All, don't forget your REGISTRATION CARD. The sticker on your kayak is not enough. Gary, there doesn't seem to be a specificaton for the light source. Steve, fireworks are at ~10. Last year I saw someone roll into the parking lot after 9.

I screwed up and put my question in comments. Matt I have a small anchor I will bring. Can anyone tell me what kind of flashlight is acceptable to ODNR? Is one of the very small LED flashlights OK?

    June 15, 2012

  • Scott

Thanks Matt! Try to get a nice shady spot, I don't want to be in the sun while eating the goodies out of someone else's picnic basket.

    June 14, 2012

  • Matt G

Thanks for posting this Scott. I was just starting to make plans. I'll be there by 4:30 and put a Paddle Ohio sign on my Jeep Cherokee windshield like past years so we can all find each other. I'll bring a table-top grill again.
Cindy, yes rookies will have no trouble. You will need a flashlight with you per regulations, but you won't need it to see.
Shirley, there is so much light downtown that you can see as far as in the daytime.
I'll bring my anchor again, but a second would help.

    June 13, 2012

  • Cindy

Sounds like this would be suitable for a rookie kayaked ? If so, count me in

    June 13, 2012

  • Scott

So who is bringing the grill?
