Arizona Trail in Flagstaff for a day

Day trip - We will leave the valley at 7:00 a.m. and ride by 10:00 a.m. in Flagstaff. The plan is to ride the Arizona Trail for a one day adventure, then back to the valley that evening.

From FR 515/418 off of 180, we’ll ride up some out-of-this-world skinny singletrack, beginning with a couple miles of switchbacks before leveling out and climbing steadily across the west flank of Mount Humphreys. Six miles and 800' of elevation gain on a mostly easy tread, weaving through aspens, ferns, ponderosas and open meadows with magnificent views of the San Francisco volcanic field. (6 miles/smooth,rolling singletrack)

Aspen Corner - This segment of the AZ Trail tops out in an aspen glade out at the intersection with the short connector trail to the parking at Aspen Corner. (4.8 miles - smooth, rolling singletrack over some easy, rocky sections - what a blast!)

Snowbowl Road to Schultz Pass - This segment is smooth and easy riding - great XC riding with moderate climbing. (6.8 miles)

Schultz Creek Trail - This is the final descent! Don’t even add these miles  because it is all downhill that is a blast! Very few technical sections and a great end to a great ride! (4.2 miles)

We may not ride the entire route depending on the makeup of the group. There are a few options and there are bailout sections but we will be shuttling which will make a bailout a bummer.  This ride could take up to 4 hours/25 miles and is not for beginners given the altitude and the duration of the ride.  If you can ride beyond 2 hours, you can do this.  Please make sure you have rain gear as it will probably rain at some point during the ride.  Pack enough snacks or food as you need to be fueled throughout the ride.

Carpooling will work best because we will have to shuttle. Please leave a comment if you can drive in the carpool and how many people and bikes you can take.

I will be in Flag the entire week of Labor Day starting the previous Friday through the following weekend, so any of those dates would work. Could also help with shuttle. I have done the ride described several times and it is a blast. Trail conditions are perfect with all the rain - NO DUST! Rain gear mandatory, however. As you know, it's mostly downhill except for the first climb, so actually a pretty easy ride.
