This is a 10-mile loop for intermediate+ riders looking for the challenge of sustained climbing, twisting rocky single track, and occasional exposure. We will start from the Eagles Nest trail head in Fountain Hills (directions below). From the trail head (elevation of 1,900 feet) we will climb Prospector (gaining about 800 feet) to the intersection with Bell Pass, at which point we will catch our breath and take in the fantastic views. We then start the twisting descent to Windmill. Windmill connects with the Dixie Mine trail and we can return to the trail head or build in an extra 4 mile loop through McDowell Regional Park.
Please bring plenty of water (100 oz recommended), as well as ample snacks and gels. Plan to ride for 2 hours. Helmets are mandatory.
DIRECTIONS: GOOGLE MAP IS NOT A GREAT RESOURCE. From Shea Blvd, take Palisades north to Sunridge Drive and turn left. Go 2.7 miles until it ends at Golden Eagle Blvd and turn left. Take Golden Eagle Blvd 0.4 miles. There is a dedicated trail parking lot before the gatehouse where we will meet. There are facilities at the trail head. You will need $2.00 to pay at the self-pay station at the trail head.
I will send my cell phone # to all participants the day before the ride in case you have questions or trouble finding the trail head.
Please post any questions or comments below.
