Sibbald Flats (Jumping Pound Loop & Picnic) MTB Ride

Dates: August[masked]
Duration: 2-3 hours + 45 min travel time to and from Calgary
Distance: 9.4 km (full loop) But it can be broken down into 5km (1/2 loop), 15km (1.5 loop), or 20km (2 loop)
Elevation Gain/Loss: 248m to highest point
Start time: 10:30 am
Starting Point: Jumping Pound Creek
Car Pool Location: Shouldice Arena (16 Ave & Home Rd)
Car Pool Muster Time: 9:00am (If your not there before that time, sucks to be you
Car Pool Costs: Approximately $15/pp (Gas and Maintenance)
Physical Activity Demands: Easy- Ride can range from Novice (1/2 loop) to Intermediate
Fun Factor: 3 out of 5 Stars (I really like this ride, especially the downhill)
Technical Ability: 4 out of 10. 10 being Red Bull Rampage Events
Trail: A sweet and super-fast singletrack for (almost) all levels of rider. This trail has a very moderate gradient with little elevation gain; not very common for Kananaskis Country. It may be ridden clockwise or counter-clockwise. The fast and flowy singletrack can be taken at speed for the more advanced rider, while beginners will appreciate the little elevation gain and the rolling nature of this track. There are a number of river/creek crossings over wooden man-made bridges.

Itinerary:
This is a go at your own pace event. Slower or novice riders are welcome, but you must have a real fully functional mountain bike. No Wal-Mart, Canadian Tire, Zellers, Superstore (CCM, SCHWINN, SUPERCYCLE, NAKAMURA, etc) bikes or hybrids please. They are not designed to be ridden off trail and the manufacture clearly states this in the manual.

Advanced riders are welcome as well. We'll split up into smaller groups with each group doing as much as they want.(1, 1.5 or 2 loops)

Bring something to eat and drink for yourself and a small something to share. There is picnic tables but a portable chair is always a great idea.
Bring a BBQ if you have one, if we get a large group, it will be much appreciated.

Required Items to Bring:
- Mountain Bike in good working order (Absolutely no Wal-Mart, Canadian Tire, Sears special Bikes)
- Helmet **NO EXCEPTIONS**
- Water (enough to do 10 kms)
- Tools, Tube and Pump
- Clothing for all weather conditions
- A CHANGE OF CLOTHES/SHOES AND A PLASTIC BAG TO PUT YOUR DIRTY CLOTHES/SHOES INTO
- First Aid Kit
- Camera (Optional)

Other than the crash right at the end I had a great time. Real good to meet you guys

I realize it was my choice to meet at the trailhead vs the carpool location, but perhaps for future meet-up's it would help to provide more accurate times (i.e. 10:30 was not the actual time of the ride). I arrived at 10:05 am thinking I would be well early enough to catch up with everyone, but the group had already departed. Fortunately a couple other riders were around and we had a great time on the trail anyway.

For the picnic afterwards, does anyone have plastic utensils/paper plates? Or are we all just bringing our own?

I would like to come. I do not have a vehicle. Is it possible for me to carpool with someone? I would contribute for fuel. I am new to Calgary and new to this group. Excited to ride!

I'll meet everyone at the Sibbald Flats parking lot. I'll try to be there shortly after 10:00. I don't have any extra room for bikes in my car (no rack), and I can't stay for the picnic.

I can't make it tomorrow :(. Have a great ride.

I lost track... does anyone still have room for another person and bike ???

    August 15, 2013

    • Robert C.

I have room in my truck. I am the coordinator of this event. I want all people to go to the carpool location to coordinate rides.

      August 15, 2013

    • Bettina

Thanks Robert. That's great ... See you at the carpool location ! (But your picture scares me) lol

    Hi guys,

My car can take one other person + bike. If anyone needs a ride, I can pick you up or meet at the car pool.

    Looking forward to meeting everyone!

It turns out I have tickets for Global Fest Sunday night, do you guys know how long the ride will be? I am up for as many loops as you guys are willing to go, 2+ should be fine if anyone else is interested. If someone wants to meet me up near C.O.P. or is in the NW I could probably pick them up.

    August 14, 2013

    • Robert C.

Graham please read the description and you will find your answers. I encourage all to meet at the Carpool area

I'd like to join. I'll be my first ride this year. I'd do 1 or 1.5 loops. I'm not a fast rider so if other bikers join it'd be great to form a small group for the not so fast riders but ok to try beginner/intermediate on the technical skills.

    August 9, 2013

    • Robert C.

you participated in the beginner course and this should be up your skill level especially the first section

I don't currently have a rack. My poor bike ride inside. I can drive myself or contribute cash to carpool if someone can bring me.

What area are you in Angela?

      August 14, 2013

  • Robert C.

I will be taking my truck and can take more bikes than people. So if people have a car that can take people I can take bikes. We can sort this all out at the Carpool area.
Be sure to bring something for the picnic after- There are picnic tables but a portable chair is also a good thing to have

I might be able to make this, I can let you know later today. I have a subaru with a bike rack on the back that can hold at least 2 bikes, maybe 3 if we get creative.

Just checked Canadian tire online and they they do have some pretty good **aluminum bikes**. Alot better than they use to be!

    August 12, 2013

    • Robert C.

Not disagreeing that you can find a half-decent bike from Canadian Tire or Walmart of any other box store, but they are not designed for true Singletrack. If anyone shows up with these bikes, it will allow them to participate but you cannot say I did not warn you.

Ya I do agree, the components usually are not great on those bikes and not good for single track that's for sure. The higher priced frames might be able to handle it thou.

      August 12, 2013

  • Giom

What is wrong with Canadian tire?
