Powderface Creek to Prairie Creek - full 21km loop

Date: Sat, August 24, 2013
Duration: up to 4 hours + 50 min travel time to and from Calgary
Distance: 21 km (full loop)
Elevation Gain/Loss: 588m to highest point
Route Map: http://www.bikepirate.com/x-country-trails/powderface-creek/
Start time: 10:00 am start on trailhead, 9:00am departure from Shouldice.
Starting Point: Powderface carpark off of Hwy 66 west of Elbow Falls
Car Pool Location: Shouldice Arena (16 Ave & Home Rd)
Car Pool Muster Time: 8:45am for 9:00am departure
Driving Directions: https://maps.google.ca/maps?saddr=Shouldice+Athletic+Park,+Home+Road+Northwest,+Calgary,+AB&daddr=50.865175,-114.792229&hl=en&sll=50.864955,-114.791792&sspn=0.001127,0.002028&geocode=FVZICwMdVvkx-SGC4XxbhyZRNSmfqXjZ-W5xUzGC4XxbhyZRNQ%3BFRckCAMd22go-Q&oq=shouldice&t=h&mra=ls&z=10
Physical Activity Demands: Intermediate. This is NOT an intro or novice ride. People should be very comfortable on their bikes and be able to handle significant slope & elevation gains.
Fun Factor: 4 out of 5 Stars - the views are fantastic
Technical Ability: 7 out of 10.
Trail: Immediate steep ascent. Varying conditions from steep shale rock, to roots in tight tree descents, to muddy creekside trails. There will be switchbacks and areas where you must carry your bike.
Itinerary:
Meet up at scheduled times at Shouldice or at the Trailhead for this 21km ride. If enough additional people wish, we could set up a shorter route (note that it will still be intermediate level) that would be 12 instead of 21km. See http://www.bikepirate.com/x-country-trails/powderface-creek-to-prairie-link/. I would ask for another lead for this group and probably another Meetup signup event if there is enough interest.
We will definitely do some beverage hydration and protein accumulation after the ride (eg- beers & food in Bragg Creek) for those inclined.
Required Items to Bring:
- Good quality Mountain Bike in good working order
- Helmet **NO EXCEPTIONS**
- Water (enough to do 20 kms) and energy food/bars
- Tools, Tube and Pump
- Clothing for all weather conditions
- A CHANGE OF CLOTHES/SHOES AND A PLASTIC BAG TO PUT YOUR DIRTY CLOTHES/SHOES INTO
- First Aid Kit
- Camera (Optional, but highly recommended)

Haha, and here I was looking forward to spending some quality time with my bike, pushing it up that 6K, 500 meter incline right out of the parking lot. The weather looks great for a morning hike with my bike. :)

Should be fun! I've got room for three plus bikes; see you at shouldice. I'm riding ranger summit/strage brew at 6pm tonight as well if anyone's heading out.

i'm renting a demo bike for the weekend to see what a full suspension 29er is like, so I might join this ride....

are there streams/rivers along the way for those of us likely to drink more than the amount of water we can carry for 21 km?

    August 22, 2013

    • Alexandra

      Camelbak makes 3ltr reservoirs.

Thanks for all the replies! I'm going to test ride the demo bike on something shorter, which I haven't had a chance to do, so i'm going top miss powder face :( The reason I asked about the water is because i drink about 2.5 l on ranger summit

My friend wants to do a different ride this day, so I'm going to cancel. Have a fun ride, maybe I'll see you in the area.

Report says that Prairie Creek is closed between the highway and the link, so it won't be possible to do the short loop:

Interesting. That means 1/2 way down Prairie Creek we'll go via the Prairie Link connector back to Powderface Creek again (a "P" loop). We'll still get most of the great views and terrain, but now may not have to carry our bikes! :) Yeah, the 12km short route is out (unless people turn back at the Link intersection). Thanks Steve!

Are we going up the east leg instead?

      August 23, 2013

  • Alexandra

I'm heading out from the South, if anyone would like to carpool, drop me a line.

I would really like to do this ride but it looks like I will be on call this weekend for work. :(
    Have fun out there!

    August 19, 2013

    • Steven M

That's too bad. :( We'll miss both your company and your bike's built-in bear repellent (AKA- squeeling brakes)! ;) How's your long weekend avail? I was thinking of setting up a West Bragg - Telephone Loop meetup...

haha! Ya its too bad because I really like the powder face trail and the prairie link loop. Its a shame about the damage on Prairie Link...thats such a beautiful trail. When I am on call I need to be in cell reception for the most part so thats why I can't make it. I was hoping to get out of town on the Sept long weekend...like Fernie or something but I have no real solid plans as of yet. I would be up for anything.

I've had feedback that Aug 24 might not be the best weekend, and Aug 17 might be better. Let me know when/if you sign up if you can do 17th too. If you want to go, but can only do 17th, please leave a comment and I'll happily change the day if most people want to go the 17th. :)

Looks like it's the 24th - sorry Paul

      August 17, 2013
