For this meetup, we are going to check out an exhibition of Odilon Redon, which will start on April 20th at Sompo Japan Museum of Art.
Redon was a French painter who explored the world of dream and unconsciousness in the later part of the 19th century. He was a leading artist of the French symbolist movement and was subsequently regarded by Surrealists as one of their precursors.
"This exhibition first focuses on his early years in his birth city of Bordeaux in southwestern France, where his interest in fantasy and natural science was cultivated, highlighting his discoveries in Bordeaux during his youth. The exhibition also explores how the discoveries in Bordeaux led to the flourishing of his later works in the period of 'noirs' and 'couleurs'." (From the website of Seiji Togo Memorial Sompo Japan Museum of Art)
In February of 2012, we had a meetup to check out a Redon exhibition at The Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, which featured the Redon collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Gifu. The exhibition at Sompo Japan Museum of Art will showcase not only the collection from the art museum in Gifu but also from Musee des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux in France. Approximately 150 works of the artist (including oil paintings, pastel drawings and prints) will be on display at this show. Hope some of you are interested in checking out this exhibition with me.
