For this Meetup, we will visit the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography in Ebisu to see two exhibitions before they close in May.
Dawn of Japanese Photography: Hokkaido and Tohoku (Admission Fee: 500 yen)
(from the press release) This exhibition will present photographs dating from 1853 to 1900 belonging to institutions with exhibition facilities in Hokkaido and Tohoku, offering the chance to see some of the earliest photographs produced in this country.
Mario Giacomelli | The Black is Waiting for the White (Admission Fee: 1000 yen)
(from Tokyo Art Beat) Italian-born photographer Mario Giacomelli's (1925~2000) work was first introduced to Japan at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography exhibition in 2008. With this exhibition, Giacomelli uses high contrast between black and white to signify the difference between life and death. The other works in this collection include photographs of the commune in Scanno, Italy and its residents' lives, along with photographs documenting the lives of theology students.
Let's meet by the ticket booth of the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography this Friday evening at 6 pm.
See you then!
