For this meetup, we will spend an afternoon in Ueno to check out two exhibitions which are distinctive different in theme.
The first one we will see is an exhibition of Shinto art and artifact called "Sacred Treasures from Shinto Shrines."
"This exhibition, on the occasion of the 62nd grand relocation of the Ise Jingu shrine, [is] held with the full cooperation of Jinja Honcho (Association of Shinto Shrines) and shrines across Japan, presenting a rare opportunity for a comprehensive view of treasures and cultural heritage related to Shinto shrines and deities." (from the website of the Tokyo National Museum)
The second one we will see is an exhibition of Leonard Da Vinci, which features his painting called "Portrait of Musician" and a compilation of his memos and drawings called"Codex Atlantics." The codex includes "sketches that indicate his interest in flying, draft proposals for military facilities, drawing of ancient sculptures in the Vatican, a letter to his father and a listing of his bibliotheca." (from the website of Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum) This is not an extensive art exhibition of Leonard Da Vinci, but it should be interesting to those who want to learn more about mind of the Renaissance man and his legacy.
In between the two exhibitions, we will also check a small show at the Tokyo National Museum called "Artifacts related to Christianity: Jesuit Missionaries and Belief under Prohibition." This exhibition showcases artifacts associated with Kakure Kirisitan (Hidden Christians who were oppressed by the Tokugawa shogunate).
