For this meetup, we are going to check out two contemporary art exhibitions in Yokohama. One is a group exhibition of Southeast Asian contemporary artists, called "Welcome to the Jungle," and the other is a solo exhibition of a Japanese artist, Akira Yamaguchi.
"'Welcome to the Jungle' introduces the contemporary art of Southeast Asia since 1999 showcasing 28 works (sculpture, painting, video, photography, and others) by 25 artists from 8 countries: Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar and Cambodia." (from the official site of "Welcome to the Jungle")
The solo exhibition of Akira Yamaguchi showcases his drawings, oil paintings, sculptures and illustrations. "Working in genres including ukiyoe, Japanese Yamato painting, western art, and manga, the contemporary artist Akira Yamaguchi re-imagines the ancient and modern motifs of eastern and western cultures. His finely detailed drawings are humorous but also sharply examine the contradictions and issues of present-day Japanese society and art." (from the description of the exhibition at Tokyo Art Beat)
I am fairly familiar with Yamaguchi's works, but not much about contemporary art from Southeast Asia. I am looking forward to learning about them through "Welcome to the Jungle" with some of you.
