Museum Hopping 25: Ghosts, Demons, and Monsters in Japanese Traditional Art

  • July 27, 2013 · 1:00 PM
  • Mitsui Memorial Museum

For this meetup, we are going to check out two exhibitions which showcase Japanese traditional art on the theme of Ghosts, Demons, and Monsters.

Animism plays an important role in Japanese traditional society, and throughout centuries, images of ghosts, demons, and monsters were created by Japanese artists to illustrate unseeable parts of the world.  These images are fascinating because they embody understanding of the world in Japanese traditional society in imaginary way.  It is interesting to see how respect and fear Japanese had towards nature and everything around us are visualized through images of demons and monsters while dark side of human psyche is captured in images of ghost.  Best of all, the representation of these super-natural phenomena can be pretty humorous.

During this meetup, we will travel from Nihonbashi to Yokohama to catch the two exhibitions.  We never traveled this much for a museum hopping, but hopefully, some of you do not mind doing it.  Let's enjoy images of uncanny creatures on a hot summer day.
