Gutai and Contemporary Japanese Painting and Photography

For this Meetup, we will visit the National Art Center in Roppongi to see two exhibitions.

The first exhibition will be Given Forms

Exhibition Admission Fee: ¥1,000

(From Tokyo Art Beat) One of Japan's leading contemporary abstract painters, Toeko Tatsuno creates vibrantly colored canvases filled with emotional. Toshio Shibata is an internationally acclaimed photographer whose black-and-white works depict manmade structures and civil engineering projects in the countryside. Both were classmates in the oil painting department at the Tokyo University of the Arts.

The second exhibition will be GUTAI: The Spirit of Era

Exhibition Admission Fee: ¥1,000

(From Tokyo Art Beat) This exhibition features around 150 works from the Gutai movement. Although well-known abroad, manifest in recent exhibitions in America and Europe, and in Kansai, this is the first major retrospective of the artists in Tokyo.

Gutai was started in Kansai in 1954 by Jiro Yoshihara and included many other artists in the Hanshin region. A leading post-war avant-garde art movement in Japan, it was disbanded in 1972, along the way producing a wealth of unique and groundbreaking art that re-examined relationships with space, form and material.

If you would like to only join for one of the exhibitions, please make a note in your RSVP.  If you will only visit the GUTAI exhibition, please be at the GUTAI exhibition entrance at 2 pm.

After visiting the two exhibitions, we will have drinks and light snacks at the Cafeteria Carre in the National Art Center as well as do some browsing in the Souvenir From Tokyo Museum Shop.
