Announcing a new Meetup for Tokyo Museum Meetup Group!

What: The World of Bruegel in Black and White
From the Collection of the Royal Library of Belgium

When: Saturday, August 7,[masked]:00 PM

Pieter Bruegel the Elder was a Netherlandish Renaissance painter and printmaker, and he was the first modern artist in my mind. While his contemporaries were busy creating religious works and portraits of aristocrats, he painted lives of ordinary people, peasants. Of course, he executed a fair share of great religious works, like Tower of Babel, yet his creative vision definitely transcended the norm of his time.

"The World of Bruegel in Black and White" showcases some 150 engravings by Bruegel and his contemporaries. I have already checked out this exhibition and was totally blown away by it. Engravings by Bruegel in this exhibition varies in subject matter, but they are generally created from acute observation of the world and/or incredible artistic imagination. I personally loved his atmospheric landscapes, from which I can almost hear the sound of the scenery, and allegories, which were created under the influence of Hieronymus Bosch but with a great sense of humor. I have to see this exhibition again and would like to share the joy of appreciating Bruegel's works with some members of Tokyo Museum Meetup Group. Hope you are interested in seeing this exhibition.
