The Power of Dogu

Dogu is Japanese ceramic figure from pre-historic time. The type of statues were produced in the Jomon Era, and they don't look anything like material culture generally associated with Japan. They are rather like the Venus of willendorf. We don't know their exact functions, but they are believed to be objects of worship. I liked these statues since I was an elementary school kid. They looked very mysterious to me, especially the ones with goggles.

The Exhibition "The Power of Dogu" was originally held at the British Museum. This show gives us opportunity to see the Japanese pre-historic statues in a large quantity, including the ones designated as national treasures and important cultural properties and important art objects. I usually do not organize event at Tokyo National Museum since their exhibitions tend to be mobbed. However, when I called up the museum last week, I learned that the show is not that crowded unlike the other blockbusters there. Would you like to check out Dogus with me?
