SF Contemporary Art Galleries

Time for our bi-monthly meetup of Contemporary Art at 49 Geary St. The previous meetup in February we had a small group and was able move together through the galleries rather than spread-out in a larger group. However, for the first time we got to see all 14 galleries in 90 min. which was a good thing because the last gallery had a fun and trendy exhibit. Some of the artists were present to discuss their art. Some galleries were serving wine and had a party atmosphere; others were quiet and serious about their exhibit. Usually, there are several pieces that really capture our attention that we can't wait to talk in depth about at our social afterwards. Each group is different. The art always thought-provoking.

“First Thursday” is when a number of SF galleries stay open later for the public 5:30-7:30, the first thursday of the month. 49 Geary St. is a building where well-established contemporary art galleries like Fraenkel, Haines, Koch, Wiriz, and more (about 14 total) are located. Unlike the museums, art in the galleries is generally edgier, sometimes controversial, maddening, etc. but hardly mundane. Guaranteed to start spirited discussions. We'll start gathering in front of the building at 5:30 and be ready to go up the elevators by 5:40. 2 hrs. is a long time for viewing, 90 min is more realistic; will start our social at a nearby pizzeria around 7:00. We'll be joined by a a few members of a photography meetup group that should bring another perspective of the exhibits.

Transportation:
1. BART- Montgomery Station, 1 block away
2. Sutter-Stockton Garage, 4 blocks away

Shai Kremer at Koch Gallery was the highlight for me but there is a wide variety of contemporary art in 14 galleries. 3 from AUE and 1 from museum group had a good time reviewing the sometimes curious art and a great time at the social get together discussing art and worldly matters.

I might go to this but it depends if I'm done with my packing and trip prep by then ...

Love to have you. Galleries are like dim sum; museums like steak dinner, IMHO.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
