SF Contemporary Art Galleries

Time for our bi-monthly meetup of Contemporary Art at 49 Geary St. The previous meetup in June we had a small group that was again inspired and puzzled by the art. Always fun to wonder what the artists are trying to say even though we admire their technique. Some galleries were serving wine and had a party atmosphere; others were quiet and serious about their exhibit. Usually, there are several pieces that really capture our attention such that we can't wait to talk about at our social afterwards. Each group is different. The art always thought-provoking.

I suggest members bring a p&s camera (no flash allowed) and/or small sketch book. There's always a piece(s) so interesting that you have to record it. Sometimes the media or subject matter of contemporary art may not interest you, but I always find composition interesting.

“First Thursday” is when a number of SF galleries stay open later for the public 5:30-7:30, the first thursday of the month. 49 Geary St. is a building where well-established contemporary art galleries like Fraenkel, Haines, Koch, Wiriz, and more (about 14 total) are located. Unlike the museums, art in the galleries is generally edgier, sometimes controversial, maddening, etc. but hardly mundane. Guaranteed to start spirited discussions. We'll start gathering in front of the building at 5:30 and be ready to go up the elevators by 5:40. 2 hrs. is a long time for viewing, 90 min is more realistic; will start our social at a nearby pizzeria around 7:00. We'll be joined by a few members of a photography meetup group that should bring another perspective of the exhibits.

Transportation:
1. BART- Montgomery Station, 1 block away
2. Sutter-Stockton Garage, 4 blocks away
3. 5th & Mission Garage, 5 blocks away

Loved the visit. I arrived a little late and didn't manage to find any of you! My favourite piece was the Richard Avedon photo of Francis Bacon -- a fellow Irishman. If you're ever in Dublin, visit the Hugh Lane Gallery -- they moved Bacon's studio from London and set it up as though he had just left it.

Fun meetup seeing a variety of contemporary and talking to a few of the artists. Must see are: Aime Mpane at Haines Gallery and Group show at Koch Gallery. Nice worldly tour discussion over pizza with everyone.

How come only 6 people may come?

I have 6 from a photography group reserved. Any more than 12 will make the social hour too crowded.

I am not available that evening but really do hope to join up for the next excursion.
