Contemporary Art Galleries

  • Feb 6, 2014 · 5:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Time for our bi-monthly meetup of Contemporary Art at 49 Geary St. The are 14 galleries with about a third of them having photography as a medium in their exhibits, remainder in painting and mixed media. Some of the highlights:

1. Nan Goldin, Self-portraits
2. "All About the Image", Group exhibit
3. Kenneth Josephson and Lauren Marsolier, Photographers

I suggest members bring a p&s camera (no flash allowed) and/or small sketch book. There's always a piece(s) so interesting that you have to record it. Sometimes the media or subject matter of contemporary art may not interest you, but I always find composition interesting in pieces that really capture our attention such that we can't wait to talk about at our social afterwards. Each group is different. The art always thought-provoking.

“First Thursday” is when a number of SF galleries stay open later for the public 5:30-7:30, the first thursday of the month. 49 Geary St. is a building where well-established contemporary art galleries like Fraenkel, Haines, Koch, Wiriz, and more (about 14 total) are located. Unlike the museums, art in the galleries is generally edgier, sometimes controversial, maddening, etc. but hardly mundane. Guaranteed to start spirited discussions. We'll start gathering in front of the building at 5:30 and be ready to go up the elevators by 5:40. 2 hrs. is a long time for viewing, 90 min is more realistic; will start our social at a nearby pizzeria around 7:00. We'll be joined at he galleries by a few members of a photography meetup group which will give us additional point of views.

Transportation:
1. BART- Montgomery Station, 1 block away
2. Sutter-Stockton Garage, 4 blocks away
3. 5th & Mission Garage, 5 blocks away

It's a "cast" painting by Tom Burckhardt at Lind Gallery. See it in person - it's very interesting.

Nice variety of contemporary art - a few controversial. Had a good talk with several artists. Pizzeria with group was very nice and we had a lot to talk about.

Hey, I was delayed today as my work shuttle never showed up. But I eventually got there, around 6; tried to keep an eye out for you but I guess we just missed each other. Anyway, I enjoyed the gallery, hope you did too. P.S.: I tried to both call and text the number in the email (Digne), was it not the correct one?

I got your message at 4:55 that you're running late, but not the ones after it.

Hi I'm on my way, I'll be there in 10. I've been trying to call and text the number Digne sent but I suspect it's not correct.

This sounds like a good event, but I have a complicated work schedule. Work days and evenings. I'll catch a weekend art show soon! You seem like a friendly well-organized group, and I love art. I'm a photographer and glass maker.

That would be tough because we'll being nearing the end of the galleries, and you would be missing a lot.
