Fri., 2/7/14: Art Talk: "Monuments Men" lecture at The Legion of Honor

The movie "Monuments Men" will be released on this day, and the Legion of Honor is hosting Google Art Talk about the true stories of these heroic men and women.

I am very excited because of the panel participants and the subject itself.

Here's the link to the event.  You can join me for the live event or follow it online:

This event is free, but if you are planning to hear it live at the Legion's Florence Gould Theater, there's a $10 admission fee to enter the museum.

Also, there's a $3.00 meetup fee to cover this group's expenses.

This is going to be such an amazing event; I hope many of you will be able to check it out.

Wish I could attend but my work is calling. I understand there are living Holocaust survivors whose families are owners of some of the art.

Rut-oh! I thought it was a live event. Thanks for this info, Lee. I'm still going to attend. I think it would be a nice experience to hear it with the panelists present, as well as to meet those experts.

For those who'd still like to attend, we could also go see the movie afterwards. It's playing at the Balboa Theater at 2:30 p.m. If the Art Talk and the post-Art Talk go past 2:00 p.m., we could check out the exhibits at The Legion. I didn't get a chance to see everything this past Sunday.

I hope you'll still join me on Friday. I'll email my phone # tomorrow night to those still interested.

Hi, I just called the Legion ---this is NOT a live event, but will be broadcast in the theater. (Note there are panelists from the Frick and Smithsonian.) Maybe those who have been to other Art Talks already know this. But thanks for the alert that it's happening.

"Monuments of Humanity" sounds more inclusive , and more accurate of what you are describing. Food for thought.

Why are they calling it "Monuments Men"?.

The movie is named after the real Monuments Men—a group of 345 male and female art authorities from 13 nations who worked together to protect monuments and other cultural treasures from the destruction of WWII. In 1943, FDR approved the formation of the “American Commission for the Protection and Salvage of Artistic and Historic Monuments in War Areas.” This led to the creation of MFAA, the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives section under the auspices of the Civil Affairs and Military Government Sections of the Allied Armies.

The Monuments Men were also called the Venus Fixers, and the FDR-approved program was widely known as the "Roberts Commission," name after the commission's chairman, Supreme Court Justice Owen J. Roberts.
