Contemporary Art Galleries

Time for our bi-monthly meetup of Contemporary Art at 49 Geary St. About this time most of the exhibits have turned-over from the last meetup. The are 14 galleries with about a third of them exhibiting photography but the paintings, sculpture and mixed media are just as interesting. Sometimes the artists are present to talk to and that is always a treat.

I suggest members bring a p&s camera (no flash allowed) and/or small sketch book. There's always a piece(s) so interesting that you have to record it. Sometimes the media or subject matter of contemporary art may not interest you, but I always find composition interesting. Pieces that really capture our attention such that we can't wait to talk about at our social afterwards. The art always thought-provoking.

“First Thursday” is when a number of SF galleries stay open later for the public 5:30-7:30, the first thursday of the month. 49 Geary St. is a building where well-established contemporary art galleries like Fraenkel, Haines, Koch, Wiriz, and more are located. Unlike the museums, art in the galleries is generally edgier, sometimes controversial, maddening, etc. but hardly mundane. Guaranteed to start spirited discussions. We'll start gathering in front of the building at 5:30 and be ready to go up the elevators by 5:40. 2 hrs. is a long time for viewing, 90 min is more realistic; will start our social at a nearby pizzeria around 7:00. Show & Tell will not be a part of this meetup. We'll be joined by a few members of a photography meetup group that should bring another perspective of the exhibits.

Transportation:
1. BART- Montgomery Station, 1 block away
2. Sutter-Stockton Garage, 4 blocks away
3. 5th & Mission Garage, 5 blocks away

Is this meet-up geared toward visual artists only? What is "show and tell?" Thanks

I used to encourage members to try photography as a way to appreciate art and composition. Practically everyone has a phone-camera.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
