First Thursday SF Galleries in October

In August we saw photographic works of Garry Winogrand, Brian Duffy, a host of other fine artists and a performing bagpipe player in full Scottish garb . This month a new set of artists are exhibiting and a few that our group might find compelling:

1. Ralph Eugene Meatyard showing his photos along side a painter exploring similar themes.
2. Ansel Adams' photos of the Manzanar camp holding Japanese-Americans during WWII.
3. Several artists not as well-known but their subject matter includes abstract, nudes and Yosemite.

Many other interesting paintings and mixed media exhibits that art enthusiasts will enjoy, ponder and be influenced in a positive way.

“First Thursday” is when a number of SF galleries stay open later for the public 5:30-7:30, the first thursday of the month. 49 Geary St. is where well-known contemporary art galleries like Fraenkel, Haines, Koch, Wiriz, and more are located. Unlike the museums, art in the galleries is generally edgier, sometimes controversial, maddening, etc. but hardly mundane. Guaranteed to start spirited discussions. We'll start gathering in front of the building at 5:30 and be ready to go up the elevators by 5:40. 2 hrs. is a long time for viewing, 90 min is more realistic; will start our social at a nearby pizzeria at 7:10. We'll be joined by a museum meetup group that should bring another perspective of the exhibits.

Some of the discussion topics in our social hour have been: If life is art and art is life, would you describe yourself as an impressionist or expressionist? What impact has alcohol or drugs have on your creative process? And, can you recognize the boundary between commercial art and fine art? As the host I realize that the members want their social to be as stimulating as the art, so I try to keep it on point, not pedantic but fun. Please join us.

Transportation:
1. BART- Montgomery Station, 1 block away
2. Sutter-Stockton Garage, 4 blocks away

The installation by the contemporary Chinese artist Ai WeiWei in Haines Gallery was well received by our group. At first I didn't think much of it, a pile of sunflower seeds (painted porcelain) in he middle of the room, after some discussion by the group many facets of it were discovered. The original installation at the Tate Gallery was cone-shape of 10 million seeds, Haines is a square with sloping sides and flattened top, maybe 50,000. There's also a back-story to Mao times. Check it out.

Intriguing and some controversial art made more interesting by having the artists on hand. Good conversation and meal at the social event.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
