'The Roman Wall - then & now' Guided Walk

  • March 2 · 2:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Come along on Saturday 2nd March at 2pm for a guided walk along the Roman Wall.

About the walk

We will be walking the route of the old Roman Wall, starting at Tower Hill and finishing near  Blackfriars. The wall was built between 190AD and 225AD and defined the shape of the City of London.  As the City expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries a lot of the wall was knocked down, although there is a bit left.

We will be following the wall using a Braun & Hogenberg map (below) which was drawn in 1572, which shows the wall intact and one of the first maps to be drawn of London.  Using the map, we will be able to see not only what the Roman's built, but also how the wall was adapted and what was built around it in the 16th century when the map was drawn.  We can then compare this by what exists on and around the wall today, some 1800 years after it was built.

The guided walk will be led by myself.  Full Member’s 2013 will be free, everyone else the walk will be £5 each.

We walk about 2 miles and so expect it to take about 2 hours 30 mins.  We finish near Blackfriars.

If you can't see us outside the station, please call.

Look out for the group sign -

Hope to see you there!

Again I would have loved to come if i got the e mail in time. However i live a good hour away, even if i had not been covered in mud from gardening. Please put me on the list for the next walk like this. Maybe i should just turn up as this is the second time i have been called in at very short notice. Can someone ring you instead of e mailing? Hi not sure what it means that I am on the waiting list as I have only just joines the group joan

    February 7

    • Meredith Small

Hi Joan, Welcome! Basically, when you're on the waiting list it means that you didn't get in on an excursion with limited numbers but if someone who did get in has to drop out, then the first person on the waiting list drops on to the "attending" list & you will get an email letting you know you're in! Don't panic if you don't make it onto the attending list, though... Robert usually repeats things which are popular & which had to have limited numbers... Good luck, though!! Hope to meet you, soon! ~M x

Terrance, you can add your name to the waiting list! I've been on waiting lists before & believe me, Robert does keep up to date with who's unable to make it & adjusts the numbers so that the list moves forward... It does sound like a good walk, doesn't it?!
