For the last session of the Improve Your Knowledge series, we will be covering the Victorian period and what London was like in those times.
This session covers the period 1837 to 1901 and we will be covering people like; Queen Victoria, Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Fry, Charles Darwin, Florence Nightingale, Sweeney Todd and Jack the Ripper.
The sessions are aimed at people who want to learn more about this period of history or fill in the gaps of their knowledge and will be at a beginner to intermediate level.
About the sessions
The sessions will be titled Improve Your Knowledge (IYK) and are aimed at members who want to learn more about various periods of London’s history and how it has affected the London of today. They will be hosted by myself and will take the form of a PowerPoint
presentation with questions.
They will educate you on each period of London's History and refer to places we have visited and objects we have seen in the past year, as well as places we will be visiting in 2012.
They will take place at the Museum of London’s Archaeology Archive and during the presentations will have a unique opportunity to be hands on with some of the objects they have in their archive relating to each period. An archaeologist from the archive will also be able to tell you more about the objects on display.
The cost to attend to cover the room hire is £5 for Full Members and £6 per person for non-Full Members, which includes tea/coffee at the venue.
We should finish by about 8:15pm, when we will head to the pub: 'The William Blake' at 174-180 Old Street.
We will be starting the session at 7pm on the dot, so don't be late!
Hope to see you there, if you can't find the venue, please call. The venue it about a 10-15 minute walk from Old Street Station, but you can get a bus from Old Street, the 141, 271, 21 and 76 buses from City Road all stop at the bottom of Eagle Wharf Road.
Hope to see you there!
Regards
Robert

It was good fun researching and presenting it, the research came from various books, websites and knowledge from visiting several museums in London. I learnt lots from researching the period that I didn't know from going through the 'British education system' as a child.

A good one to finish off the series. I would have liked more detail about Victoria's reign, and her influences across Europe.

The event itself was rather disappointing but there were some really lovely, interesting people to talk to.
I wasn't greeted as I arrived but just asked for money and pointed towards the next room.
The presentation was read from the powerpoint slides. The presenter didn't seem to know his material very well.
The pub was very loud with football screens. It wasn't obvious where we were supposed to meet. The pub seemed to know nothing about us. The organiser didn't seem interested in talking to me or the other first timers present. We weren't acknowledged in any way.
As I say, there were some really friendly, likeable people I enjoyed talking to. Sadly, at least one of them won't be coming back.
I want to be fair so would give the group another go to see if this was a one-off. The people seem well worth meeting if the events themselves are usually of a higher standard. It's very fair that you can attend two events before deciding whether to part with the membership fee.

Robert gave a very informative lecture, covering main facts, lives of the famous people and achievements of Victorian era. I find these lectures being very helpful in improving my knowledge about British history, as well I always discover something new about particular period in London's timeline. Thank you very much, Robert!

Robert was a surprisingly poor orator and seems to have taken most of his content from Wikipedia. If you have been through the British education system then little of the content will be new to you.
However, everyone seemed to enjoy the talk. If you are from overseas, want to know more about British history and would like a easy to understand overview then I recommend you check this out.
Overall :Friendly, easy to understand and pleasant. Just a little dull.

Hi Robert, Due to ill health I'm sorry to say that I will not be able to come tonight. Great shame as it sounds really interesting.
