By now, most of our members are aware of the upcoming once-in-a-lifetime exhibition of "China's Terracotta Warriors: The First Emperor's Legacy"and many will be attending our private tour on November 25th. This exhibit is a really big deal and will only be shown at three other museums in the country. This is a ticketed event, however, for this FTT, if you are not already a MIA member, become a member for a day, at no cost and see this awesome exhibit free. All you have to do is sign up at the table in the lobby. This is one exhibit that you will definitely want to see more then once, so even if you are going on our private tour, this will be your chance to get a preview. Let's plan to meet by 5:45, by the tables set up by the information desk. Look for our sign. We will decide as a group, what time we want to see the Terracotta Warriors and decide what other activities we want to do. We will wait as long as possible for latecomers. A $3.00 donation for Meetup expenses is greatly appreciated.
As with all FTT's there are other activities planned. We never know the full list of what's planned until we get there, here is what they have announced so far. As more information gets posted, I will update this page and send out an email.
GET LUCKY with a fortune cookie that will send you on an adventure.(sounds interesting!)
BEDAZZLE yourself with a fascinator inspired by ancient Chinese hair ornaments, with fashion designer Samantha Rei of Blasphemina's Closet. (find out what a fascinator is!)
SHIMMY & SHAKE with hip-hop collective The Chalice. (shimmy and shaking optional!)
I expect there will be a whole lot more going on and that it will be a very good experience for all of us. If you would rather wait to see the exhibit, no problem, FTT is museum wide, so everyone is free to take part in what ever activities they choose. There is a cash bar for anyone who wishes to enjoy a beverage.
A Word About Free Third Thursday's
As I said above, we never know exactly what is planned until we get there and pick up a program. Each FTT has a different theme, sometimes there are several activities to choose from, other times, not so much. It's really hard to set exact times for each one, because exhibits or activities sometimes don't take as much time to explore as we planned, while other times it takes longer. The beauty of FTT is that you can stay as long as you like and if you need to leave early you can. If you want to go and explore something others don't, most likely, someone else will be happy to join you to see what you want. There are no rules. Sometimes we wrap up our visit earlier then expected, then again, we have been known to leave at closing time. So, let's enjoy the evening and go with the flow.
As always, please plan to join us, if you can, for our get together afterward at a local restaurant. We have some great discussions and get to know each other better.
If you haven't been to the MIA recently, be aware that they now charge for parking in the ramp and in their lots. Free on street parking is still available around the MIA if you can get there early enough. I'm pretty sure this will be crowded, so allow extra time for parking.
