Friday Jazz at High

January's Friday Jazz performer is Melvin Jones. Friday Jazz is an evening of art & music every third Friday of the month with extended hours with full gallery access including special exhibitions.

Free with museum admission and free to members.

It is also the close of Fast Forward, an exhibit of Modern Works.

About Melvin Jones:

Melvin began his professional musical journey in 1998 while enrolled at Morehouse College when he made an appearance on TLC’s triple-platinum album Fanmail. That same year Melvin, together with Kevin Johnson and Broderick Santiago, formed Rio Negro, one of the most popular Latin Jazz ensembles in the Southeast. Earning a great deal of success and popularity, the ensemble recorded three albums while also touring nationally. Since the creation of Rio Negro, this Memphis, Tennessee, native has worked with numerous musical icons including Quincy Jones, Jennifer Lopez, Ray Charles, Erykah Badu, Isaac Hayes, Stevie Wonder, Brian McKnight, Michael McDonald, Bill Cosby, and British pop sensation Omar, to name a few.

The venue was wonderful and the band was amazing -- five stars alone! I was disappointed at not connecting with the Meetup Group, with the exception of Sandy, another first-timer who I happen to meet in the parking garage elevator. We arrived a few minutes after 7pm and headed up to Fast Forward to view the exhibit. We didn't recognize anyone from the group and eventually headed down to enjoy the band. As a first-timer I would have enjoyed meeting other group members ... I hope future events offer such an opportunity.

Looking forward to Jazz at High ... Does the group gather in the lobby area or what's the norm?

Danielle, the group organizer responded -- I thought it went out to all? -- but he says he'd try to make sure to match up those of us with the Meetup group; also, I believe he invited those interested to meet in front of the FAST FORWARD Exhibit at 7pm -- this particularly exhibit will be closing soon.

Also, I believe there was someone who mentioned, like me, that Jazz Friday will be their first Meetup event. I've got a dual membership to the High; so I get access for me and a guest. I'll extend this invite, first to the person who posted this event as their first Meetup. If that person is no longer attending or has other arrangements, I'd just like to make sure I can save someone the $20. Might be easier to send me a private message via Facebook. Thanks!

Good question Cheryl, how do we identify other Meet-up Members? Usually (well, based on my limited experience with events like this) the group organizer designates a spot or area.....

Good question Cheryl, do I need to bring something like an rsvp print out?
