Understanding exposure and how the dSLR camera interprets light are very difficult concepts beginning photographers have a hard time grasping. This seminar will get you thinking about how your camera interprets light and how to record it properly.

ABOUT THIS SEMINAR: We will concentrate on how light is translated into a photograph. You will learn...

  • the elements of proper exposure (exposure triangle).
  • how to properly set shutter speed, aperture and ISO to get proper exposure.
  • the difference between correct exposure and creatively correct exposure.
  • the differences between aperture based and time based exposures.
  • when to use priority modes and why.
  • what conditions affect your meter so you can compensate exposure.
  • why you can't fully rely on your built-in meter.

I will also cover...

  • how to use exposure tables and calculators.
  • exposure dynamic ranges and how to extend them.

*** We WILL NOT be using cameras in this seminar ***

WHAT TO BRING: Since this is a lecture bring a notepad and pen to take notes. While we won't be shooting, do bring your camera as it makes following along with some of the examples easier.

You will also need to download and bring with you both the Exposure Calculator and Exposure Wheel found in the 'files' section of this site.

Snacks and drinks will be made available.

Duck, Is. This a longer version of what you did in Newington or is it the same training?

    February 5, 2013

    • 'Duck'

This is much longer. The first part is what was done in Newington but I also go into creative use of exposure.

    Excellent info. Thanks, Duck.

    Duck and Diane,
Thank you so much for your teaching and hospitality. I personally got a lot out of yesterday's lecture and meeting the nice people who attended. I look forward to more. Warm regards, Bob L

Hey Bob, I just downloaded two (Free) apps for my iPhone - Expositor Lite and Sunny 16 - to play with.

thanks. I don't have an I-Phone. My compnay provides me a BlackBerry :)...thanks again.

Thank you, Duck. You gave us a finite clear approach to making decisions about settings....and achieve successful exposures. Thanks for your hard work and all the prep time. Diane, you were a charming hostess. Love the cake!

Thanks to you for providing a very informative few hours in a great relaxed atmosphere. My wife and I together learned a lot of stuff, which I think is credit to how it was presented. We enjoyed meeting our fellow photographers and chatting as well as the hospitality – Thank you again and hope to see everyone very soon.

The reason for attending learning workshops is for that "ah-ha!" moment. Hopefully everyone had one of those. If you didn't, don't fret. As I said, it is a lot of material to comprehend but you now have something to build on. Your "ah-ha!" moment may just be around the corner.

Thank you all for making this lecture a great one.

Hi any thoughts about the use of a teleconverter (2x) with a 70-200mm 2.8? I shoot with a Sony A77. Any help appreciated.

  • Pat Cook

    Good material and good presentation.

Very informative and “Duck” knows how to explain things easy, he cover a lot, some things I already knew, some where new and I learn, thanks a lot to Duck and Diane :-)

    Hi
I use a Sony A77 with a Tamron 70-200 2.8 macro. I would like to increase my focal range without necessarily purchasing another lens. Would you recommend a teleconverter and if so, which one. I would like to get one that is 2X.
Thanks for your help. I look forward to finally meeting my fellow members.

    • 'Duck'

That's a good question. I'll give you my thoughts at the lecture.

I am on the wait list Duck, as far as I can tell. Please let me know if there is space. Thanks!

JUST noticed this meetup. Do you think this seminar can be recorded and posted online, for those who didn't make the list or can't attend? If the presenter doesn't want to be filmed (which I totally understand for privacy), then perhaps filming of the white board and audio?

Switched to March and hoping to free this up for someone else. I have something that could possibly prevent me from attending....sooooo instead of a last minute cancelation I hope another member can benefit.

    • 'Duck'

Thank you Debbie, that's very thoughtful.

      February 2, 2013

  • 'Duck'

Don't forget to bring your questions with you. Write them down so you don't forget.

  • 'Duck'

Okay, the votes are in and some very valid points were stated. I will leave the count as is and try to reschedule something soon. Those of you who are listed as attending but find you can't make it, please change your RSVP so others can attend. Don't wait for the last minute as people on the wait list may not get the message in time.

    Thank you all

As this will be my first meetup I am willing to go with the group. Thanks RichG

  • Bill

    Comfy is fine with me.

    January 31, 2013

  • Mary

Can I vote for 70 degrees and having it outside?

    January 31, 2013

  • Sue

If you can seat all 6 and we're not on each other's laps, go for it; or 4... whatever # you can accommodate (assuming people are listed in order of responding.) You might now have to close the wait list! ; )
We're adults. I think we can cope just fine.

  • Erin

I think 12 is a good size for some of the same reasons that Pat stated.

    January 31, 2013

  • Pat Cook

It's more than a question of 'cozy'. Too crowded and people can't concentrate as well. There are also more people to ask questions. There will be more distrurbances as people get up for coffee and the rest room. For those who bring their cameras, the cameras are more likely to get bumped. It shouldn't be just a seating question. I say if you know you can handle 12 comfortablly, trust what you know and stop there. You could repeat the meetup. You could also call for a confirmation of who is really coming or not to see some if seats can be salvaged.

    January 31, 2013

  • Bob LaMonaca

I agree, you are the host and know capacity.I'm happy to accomodate what ever you decide. Thank you again for hosting.

    January 31, 2013

  • Debbie McCallum

    Cozy is ok with me.

    January 31, 2013

  • Subi Pete

As I will be attending with my wife, I think we can get "cozy". Really OK by us. Your the host and know the size vs comfort etc, so your call. Really looking forward to it now.

    January 31, 2013

  • 'Duck'

Yep, I need to find a bigger space. If people don't mind getting 'comfortably close' I can extend the list but it will be tight. If you are attending or on the waiting list cast your vote here. Reply with something like, 'yes, extend the list' or a 'no, that's too many people'. Majority will win.

  • Pamela Skelly

I just got on the waiting list for Feb 3 and realized I can't make it. I'm not sure how to take myself off the list. Thanks. Pam

No problem, just click on the "CHANGE RSVP" link to modify your selection. I took the liberty and changed it for you.

This should be a wonderful workshop. Duck has a wealth of information and is a good teacher.

Who is prensenting? Why 5:00PM on a Sunday? Seems a bit late to start a 2-3 hour seminar given a weekend day.

    January 6, 2013

    • 'Duck'

You're right. That's what I get for rushing things... I changed it to 2:00. Thanks for pointing that out.

      January 6, 2013

  • Paul

What's the cost for this seminar??

    January 6, 2013

    • 'Duck'

      This is a free lecture
