Duck,
    Your update on Diane and her day is much appreciated. Those of us with elderly parents can sympathize.
No one realizes the emotionally grueling experience it is to watch a parent's health and mind deteriorate
until they witness it for themselves. We can only be strong and be by their sides, caring for them while showing
our love as complications develop and they go in and out of the hospital and rehabs. Our thoughts are with you
and Diane during this difficult time.
 
     As an organizer, I truly appreciate your bringing up the concept of venues and your cogent assessments and comments. 
It is a huge issue. Coincidentally, yesterday I had been researching a bunch of studios from Manchester to Milford and in between. 
The professional places charge about $45 per hour. Then, if you need equipment or want to use their props and backdrops,
they often charge you more. It would be wonderful if there was a large hall centrally located that all the photo meetup groups
could use for a reasonable rental fee. We need a photographer advocate who would offer us a place and a break! I'll keep looking
and will share any info I find. There is a ballet studio I know about that might rent the space. And certainly there are members
out there who, if they stop and think a minute, will be reminded of a building with a large room near them that can be used. I'll share your
info with others. Maybe an office building has a large room sitting there empty. The proprietor would be wise to let the photo groups
and even their members rent it rather than having it generate no income at all.
 
    Let's all make it a serious priority to find a place soon! Just think of the possibilities if we could find a "home!"

The storm is past us, thankfully. We fared well here in Shelton. Lost power due to some fallen trees. Our neighbors got really luck as the trees fell around their houses rather than on them. One neighbor had three large pine trees fall. One in the front and two in the back, completely missing their home. Talk about luck. Another neighbor had a tree fall in her front yard away from the house and a second one land up her driveway completely missing her garage. In all we are all doing fine.
Hopefully you fared as well. I got some quick snapshots of some of the damage. I'll be posting a couple on Facebook later on. I have no internet at home and I am actually writing this email from work. Business is slow today so I will be closing up early.
Diane and I are very grateful for all the well wishes we have received regarding her father. Currently he is at a rehab center for evaluation. As of right now things don't look so well. He has episodes where his memory is really bad. He has very little upper body strength and his Parkinson's is taking its toll. On top of that, his bladder infection may have returned. Diane is now fighting something, could be bronchitis as it seems to be going around. Every time the phone rings, specially at odd hours of the night, her heart skips a beat. It's really taking its toll on her. I told her she needs a good vacation.
Historically, the months of November and December are difficult for doing meet ups. These months are heavy with holidays and most people turn to family events at these times. I am looking to do some small in-home meet ups in the next couple of months, depending on how things go with Diane's dad. In particular there has been requests for Lightroom workshops and camera basics. I also have a couple of studio projects I want to see come together.
Sadly the studio lighting workshop that Mid CT was planning was not able to come to fruition. Maybe after the new year we can see about trying it again with them. The idea for a tag sale/swap meet was brought up and I want to push forward on that come springtime. So go through all your gear and sort out all the stuff you don't use.
CALL TO ACTION: One of the problems with hosting large workshop events is space. Mid CT ran into this problem with their recent lighting workshop and unfortunately they were unable to procure the needed number of people to secure the event location. Milford Photo had similar issues with their Flash of the Titans event.
Unfortunately renting a large venue space is costly and often the event coordinators will put together an event hoping the turnout will cover the costs. Because of the economy being so tight things have not turned out as planned and groups have been taking a loss on events like these. It is a shame considering all the time and effort that goes into planning these events and more so because the members who DO want these events are left hanging. So here is my challenge to you all;
If you have access to a large event space for little to no cost, please forward that information to  me and to Sue O and Sue F for future consideration. It could be a club house through your condo association, a back room at a local restaurant, etc. Let's use our connections and see if we can find some locations that will allow us the flexibility to do some of these bigger workshops. Some things to keep in consideration is that most large workshops require a lot of prep work and equipment. Members will likely be charged a nominal fee to attend. Some venues allow public use but only if there is no charge for the event. While we can use spaces like this for some events, it is not the most ideal for large costly workshops. So when sending in suggestions for locations we will need the following information;
  • Name of venue
  • Location of venue
  • Contact person and phone number
  • When the venue is available (preferably weekends) and hours
  • Rental fee (if any)
  • How large the venue is (usually by number of people it will hold)
  • Any special requirements (mandatory staff, auxiliary services, security access, limitations on parking, etc.)
Since most of us are also members of other area photo groups I will be sharing this info with them as well. It benefits all of us, so please be generous. As coordinators we don't have the time to do a lot of the legwork, specially if the suggested venues are outside our normal stomping grounds. If a venue is local to you, please scout them out for us. We can't use, "Have you thought about such-and-such?"
We know certain local libraries have public rooms but most are not open on Sundays or late at night when we, as a group, have the available time. The same is true with many town community centers.
If you are a business owner and have access to a large space, that's ideal. Unfortunately my space is small otherwise I'd do something there. I know a couple of members who have studio space available and I'll be contacting them about renting their space for the future. But if we can get something cheap or free, it will keep workshop costs down for members.
