Thanks to member Christine for suggesting this. We all know the book, should be a very interesting play indeed.

"April, 1984. 13:00. Comrade 6079, Winston Smith, thinks a thought, starts a diary, and falls in love. But Big Brother is always watching. Orwell’s ideas have become our ideas; his fiction is often said to be our reality. The “definitive book of the 20th century” (The Guardian) is re-examined in a radical new staging exploring surveillance, identity and why Orwell’s vision of the future is as relevant now as ever."

Tickets can be found here: http://www.almeida.co.uk/event/1984we

I'm now in Dress Circle J21 (no longer in Upper Circle J3). Ticket £19.84.

I also had to look a way at the torture scenes but I can't fault the play for that - acting was also brilliant as I think they got the understatement just about right. Knowing the book it was clearly going to be a thought-provoking play and I'm glad they didn't shy away from the nastier bits of the book as otherwise the play wouldn't have worked. I did come home with a bit of a heavy heart though, especially after our little critique in the pub where we all agreed how well Orwell predicted the changing society and how much was true today! Roll on Skylight next week when we might leave the theatre more buoyant!

hmm, I knew this wasn't going to be a "song and dance" play (knowing the book) but unfortunately it was a bit too depressing for me (the torture scenes were very difficult to watch). It did have some very poignant messages though, especially in today's 24/7 iphone society. The guy who played Winston Smith was outstanding though.

Hi all, I'll be in the foyer around 2pm, please note that there is no interval, so I hope to see you all beforehand. Not sure if we can go for a swift half afterwards due to the World Cup (would think that all pubs will be very busy). Penny and Shannen, I have emailed you my mobile phone no, pls check your spamfolders as well, as my messages sometimes end up there. See you all on Saturday :-).

hi all, I'm now sitting in Dress Circle J21, if you have an Upper Circle seat, contact the Almeida, they might offer you an upgrade or a refund for the difference as Upper Circle tickets are going for £10 now. Although not sure if this is for all Upper Circle seats, but it's worth a try !!!!
