THE SHOW:

Acclaimed jazz singer Barbara Morrison stars in this staged musical tribute to Dinah Washington, the legendary singer often referred to as the "Queen of the Blues." I Wanna Be Loved celebrates the timeless music of the popular recording artist, who had a long string of R&B hits in the late '40s and '50s and achieved national crossover success with her top 10 hit "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes." This music-filled show features the 18-piece Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center All-Star Jazz Big Band, under the direction of John Stephens.

If you know Barbara Morrison, or if you saw her do Big Mama Thornton in a play/musical about her life, you know this is going to be great!  It's getting rave reviews everywhere and has been extended.

    Carol,
I read your posting after I sent you an email thanking you for an amazing event. I think Maria stated it so well. I am so grateful for your sensitivity. I am just thrilled to have found a great group of women and such classy leader. Thanks for making me feel special.

Carol, I appreciate your sensitivity and caring to always make sure everything is perfect. Certainly, for Karen and me, sitting in the front row made a difference in our feeling a part of the show and enjoying it immensely.

Last night I attended the Gay Men's Chorus at the Saban in Beverly Hills. When I got there at 8 pm, everyone, including the chorus was still outside. Will call for hundreds and hundreds of people was not set up and we stood in line outside the theatre. Eventually, the staff printed the tickets and were calling out ticket holder names. The program was delayed 30 minutes and the staff apologized. The staff at BMPAC also apologized for the AC, the sound, etc. These things happen, even at a venue like the Saban. Again, thanks for the opportunity to see the show. I loved it and am so grateful you organize events I wouldn't otherwise know about and would therefore miss.

Best wishes for a wonderful year Karen C.

I was shocked at the unprofessional presentation @ the BMPAC venue. There was no AC, seats all on the same level, not even enough seats for tickets sold, staff was talking throughout the show, terrible sound, disorganized check in and seating arrangements, etc., etc., etc., Barbara Morrison is a very entertaining personality, whatever she is performing, and because of the sound, inability to hear when she was speaking, the heat, etc., it was not a good experience. We left at intermission. I will be contacting Goldstar and see what they have to say when they talk to management. Sorry everybody! And especially to Karen C., crappy ending to your birthday! Sorry we didn't even get to sing to you or have a cupcake after the show or something, it was a rare bad event!

Carol, we know you work very hard to plan enjoyable events and outings. This was indeed rare. One thing that is always perfect is the company of my MSK sisters. As always, thank you for efforts. I'm already looking forward to my next event :)

No need to apolgize Carol. You found what we all thought would be an opportunity to support Barbara Morrison and honor Dinah Washington. When we were leaving, one of the organizations asked us to reconsider. She was gracious and apologetic. Bright side...It is always wonderful to spend time with my sisters...Thank you for all you do for us..

So looking forward to this event Carol! Ihaven't been to Eso Won in a million years..great idea..Post and Beam- I am down only if you can guarantee a glimpse of the 'eye candy personified' chef...

    June 5, 2013

    • Carol

Can't promise, that was Kathy's hype for the place (and she's not coming to the event!). So we'll have to see if we agree with her, if we catch a glimpse.

OK, Post & Beam it is, let me know whether you are coming for lunch as well.

The only other place in the area is Dulans (I haven't been there in years, so can't vouch for their current service or food quality)
But, I do know it is not in the same class as Post and Beam.

Dulan's is closed on Sundays. Not too many restaurants are open for dinner on Sundays in this neighborhood.

      June 5, 2013

    • Carol

I was waiting to hear back from Loi, but it looks like Post and Beam is the best/only suggestion left, so I'll go ahead with posting it

      June 5, 2013

  • Kay

I would love to go to Post and Beam for lunch at 1:30 pm instead of dinner. Not that many options available in that neighborhood...

    1 · June 5, 2013

    • Kay

It looks like they have a good brunch menu on Sundays, like grits, biscuits...etc.

      June 5, 2013

  • Kathy

    oh gosh--LOL
I am not attending this particular event. I've just been commenting because I was hoping to attend but now not doesnt look like I will be able to. :o(

    June 4, 2013

    • Carol

Oh wow, I didn't even notice that!!! OK, I'll start all over with a poll of the REAL interested parties!! Just kidding......................thanks for the suggestion, though.

      June 4, 2013

  • Carol

So Kathy, are you open to doing lunch instead of dinner and still doing Post and Beam?

    June 4, 2013

    • Carol

And Loi - I didn't mean to address that only to Kathy - but I sent you another message earlier, Loi about the possibility, see below, of going to a leisurely lunch @ 1:30, etc.

      June 4, 2013

  • Dee D.

I, too, was looking forward to dining at Post and Beam. Is doing lunch before the show out of the question?

    1 · June 4, 2013

    • Carol

Yeah, me too & I know Kathy was also. I just thought it would be easier to do dinner after since it would still be early and we wouldn't have to rush from lunch to the show, but how about this idea - we have lunch at, say, 1:30, we can take our time (and also we don't want to cut it too close to their closing time of 3:300, and if we get to the theater early, there's Eso Won book store in the same block, which I'd love to visit again, as well as some other shops, so we can look around a bit, not like we'd just be sitting in the theater lobby. Sounds like a plan to me! I'll post the details this evening.

      1 · June 4, 2013

I was going to schedule dinner @ Post and Beam, but unfortunately they are only open until 3:30 p.m. on Sundays :-( I was also going to suggest Maverick's Flat, because I enjoyed the dinner I had there recently, but it's not open on Sunday evening either. What's with the people of West Adams? Do they party so hard on Fri. and Sat. they have to go to bed early on Sunday night? LOL. Anyway..........

Does anyone have any other suggestions in that area? Carol

    June 4, 2013

  • Kay

Hi Carol, just sent you the payment via PayPal. For dinner, I would love to go to "Post and Beam", but regardless of the restaurant, I will definitely join the group for dinner after the show.

Donna, Loi, Dinah, and Lorraine+1 - Let me know if you sent your payment and I missed it somehow. Otherwise, please send payment ASAP - I'm out of pocket $125 and could use the money - thanks!

We'll have dinner after the show somewhere close to the venue - I have received one recommendation so far, and I also asked BJ, she lives in the area:

Kathy recommends (sounds good, and parking is probably not an issue, especially on Sunday); Kathy, what type of food do they have (I know, it's important that the chef and owner are hot and yummy, but what about the food, lol?):

I reccommend Post and Beam! Its eight-ten minutes from Degnan. Owned by handsome Brad Johnson--featuring top chef Govind Armstrong. (both men are african american and yummy looking!) The restraurant is a Zagat award winner, featured in LA Magazine, LA Times; and several other publications.
