Thanksgiving day volunteerism: serving turkey & trimmings to homeless, Pasadena

Update, Friday, Nov 2nd:  I spoke at length with the new Dinners in the Park CEO, Joseph, over a couple of days this week.  Changes in time for us and change in assignment.

Time change: Joseph prefers that we work only a 1 hour shift, meeting 1/2 hour before shift is to begin.  So we're  going for the 10:30 (meet time,) and shift 11 AM - 12 PM. 10:30 AM: volunteer lounge: that's where you'll find me and us! 11AM: we start our "greeting" at the guests' line-up area. Upside to this: we'll have more time to sleep in that AM.  Or be busily baking or shopping if we have a later  Thanksgiving engagement after our volunteer event.

Assignment change:  We want to help Union and help the many less fortunate than ourselves.  Joseph declared that the area of greatest need is not in Kitchen help, but in greeting our guests as they line up for their lunch, making them feel welcomed and appreciated.

This will be our 6th annual MSK Central Park event. One component of MSK's mission statement is to pay it forward.  We don't have to bring anything: we just have to collaborate w/the cool union station, our Pasadena organizers.

What a wonderful group we are!! Our Union Station outreach cordinators have fine-tuned this event, so that the over 3,000 lunches we helped serve just last year,  played out like a finely-tuned violin.  Oh--and we work along side good-looking, volunteer firefighters, Canadian Rockies, generous families, and handfuls of church groups.  It's all good. From an organizational stand-point, I thought it best if we sisters are all working one shift. 11 Am- 12 PM, along with, of course, those cute, pole-dancing fire fighters, the Universal Studios volunteers, and sundry fun others.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye:  Dee's Thanksgiving event is up, running & posted. Pls. use her event page: Write in comments section on her event page, not here, if you're one of the merry group staying only for a toast.  (I think I wrote in most of y'all--who'd indicated interest in a short bonding with their fellow MSKers-- in Dee's comments section.  But go to her page to check it!)

2) You'll write on Dee's page, not here, ubnder commnts: "I can stay for an hour, appx, 1PM - 2PM, for a sisterly toast @ Dee's ! I can bring bubbly, a cider, or a non-perishible, such as nuts, Chex mix, or cookies. Pls. bring a small ice cooler to chill your wine, bubbly, or cider, so they will be chilled by the time we arrive @ Dee's.

For my volunteers who want to go all out with the Thanksgiving feast @ Dee's:  go to Dee's event listing, and please rsvp under "yes, I'm going."  Again, I think I covered my girls who answered they'd love to attend.

3)  Yay! I'm an orphan in LA, whether or not I volunteer in the AM or not, I'm coming to to Dee's traditional Thanksgiving with the girls, appx 1PM - to whenever.  Please check with Dee re: for ex: side dishes, sweet potato pie, mac n cheese, or dessert that you will be bringing.  With the exeption of Dee's turkey, we're doing this potluck.

Between our sisters' radiant glow and the guests' enthusiasm over all the attention, love, not to mention their terrfic turkey meal & face-painting for the lil ones, there were extremely good vibes floating throughout Central Park. Thank you, MSK volunteers: all wonderful, free, and generous spirits!

Do we need to apply to volunteer on the Union Station Homeless Services website? I tried and it said we need to attend orientation sessions.
