The Northern NJ MySQL Meetup Group is a place for people interested in the free and open source MySQL database to get together and meet others to discuss and learn more about MySQL.

We welcome all members who are interested in participating: we are not exclusive to discussing only MySQL at the Meetups. We cover a broad range of topics, depending on who attends the meetup and what their interests are.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Dossy Shiobara or Steve Goguen.

We meet on the first Wednesday of every month. Our current venue is the Panera Bread on Route 4 West in Paramus, NJ, located in the strip mall with Kohl's and Daffy's across from the Bergen Mall.

    •  I think everyone had a good opportunity to ask questions about databases and programming in general from a lot of different people who have an interest in this topic. We also learned from Stephen who showed us step by step how to use a templating program, Smarty, for converting macros (of a sort) in language that can be used by PHP to update fields on a website. Of particular note was the idea that you can custom make a tag, such as "sqlserver", which could connect your website's page displays with updated information in a database. A discussion followed this note about whether a template tool should ever be imbued with logical control facilities. Stephen said extensions like this, although not really supported by Smarty's distributor, could be the best practical solution to some problems. I asked about XML. Stephen adroitly acknowledged that XLST's functions and those of PHP were quite similar. Dossy pointed out that XML is a more robust modeling language that deals with objects (it ain't just strings).

It was amazing, we had 11 people attend! This was the largest Meetup since we started. Steve G. did a great job presenting the Contact Manager with Smarty templates. I hope we can get everyone to come on back for next month's Meetup.
