July 11, 2007: Northern NJ MySQL Meetup

Hello, everyone,

== JULY's MEETUP DATE MOVED ==

July's normally scheduled meetup falls on the 4th of July this year
(thanks for pointing this out, Steve Z.), so I've moved it to Wednesday,
July 11th.

== MySQL 2007 USER CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS ==

The MySQL 2007 User Conference was held at the end of April in Santa
Clara, CA, this year, and the presentations are now available for
download:

    http://conference...

I'd like everyone to take a minute to review the presentation titles and
pick one or two that you're interested in by July 6th. Email me your
choices. Then, for the July meetup, we can review the most popular
choices as part of the meetup.

== APRESS BOOKS ==

In other news, I've registered our Meetup with Apress, a publisher of
techincal/professional books, and we are eligible to receive their User
Group discount. To receive the discount, place your order with their
distributor, Springer, by calling (800) SPRINGER ([masked]).
Mention the discount code "APRESSUG" and the "Northern NJ MySQL Meetup"
to receive the discount. In addition, we may be able to receive free
copies of books in exchange for writing a review. Here's a link to
Apress's review guidelines:

    http://www.apress...

If you'd like to get a free book and would be willing to write a review
in exchange, let me know which titles you're interested in and I'll ask
for them.

== MEETUP MEMBER LIST CLEANUP ==

This group was founded almost four years ago and since that time Meetup
says we have 79 (!) members--thank you all for joining! However, we've
only seen 15-20 of you at our regular monthly Meetups. What is keeping
the rest of you from coming out and meeting with us? Please let me
know; perhaps there's something I can do about it.

Of the 79 members, close to 40 haven't visited the website since 2007
started. 24 of you have never RSVPed even once. This still means that
we have close to 40 active members but only 15 or so have come out to
the Meetup. What would it take to get the other 25 or so of you to come
join us?

I'm going to start cleaning up the member list of inactive members. If
you'd like to remain a member of the group even though you haven't or
won't be able to attend our Meetups, please visit the Meetup website and
RSVP "No" for July's Meetup, please?

    http://mysql.meet...

I realize many Meetup groups have hundreds of members--most of whom are
inactive--but I'd really like our meetup to hold "quality rather than
quantity" as one of our goals.

...

Thanks a lot for being part of this great meetup and I hope that I can
incorporate everyone's feedback to make this an even better group!

I'm looking forward to seeing you all this July,
