*Free* Cherry Blossom and Tidal Basin sunrise in DC

Let's meet in DC for sunrise on April 5th. It is my hope that the cherry blossoms will be in full bloom. We will meet at the Martin Luther King Memorial at 5:45 am and the sun will rise at 6:48am. Just be warned that this time of year gets VERY crowded at the Tidal Basin.

If anyone has good parking suggestions please leave them in a comment below, also please comment if you are interested in carpooling from Annapolis.

You should bring definitely bring a tripod and a wide lens. A zoom would be great too.

I owe everyone a gigantic apology. I overslept this morning but managed to get from Annapolis to the Tidal Basin by 5:45 in 35 minutes, yeah! However, I could not find parking, and because police had started to shut down streets. We ended up parking on Independence around 7th Street. By the time we walked to the Tidal Basin it was after 7AM. Sorry to not be their to greet everyone, I was looking forward to seeing everyone and taking photos together. Thanks!

My first meet up but I missed the group because Ohio street was closed. I found a free lot near the Jefferson Memorial. Had a lot of fun. Beautiful morning!

Sorry, I won't be making it after all. I have a back injury that's not recovering quickly enough.

Hi All! I wanted to send a long a few links for directions and parking suggestions. A few members had posted a few street location suggestions as well on the event page. You will be responsible for your timely arrival so please allow yourself extra time to park and walk to the location. You may have an half mile + walk to our meeting spot depending on where you park so please plan accordingly. The group is meeting promptly at 5:45 am then quickly dispersing to individual shooting spots along the basin.
Please be aware that there is a large parade for the Cherry Blossom Festival from 10am-Noon. It might be something you want to check out. If you aren't into the parade you may consider checking the parade route to make sure you don't park somewhere you'll be stuck on DC. I really don't know much about it so here is a link to find out more information.

Please upload photos to our event album afterwards. I can't wait to see your shots. I'm sad I'm missing the event but you are in great company and Nels will be there to greet you. A few shooting suggestions

      -Look for reflections

-frame the monuments with trees, branches and blossoms

-incorporate depth of field to highlight the blossoms

-shoot up into the trees for a different vantage point.

Ok well this mornings recon found the blossoms about 10% open. Some varieties more then others but shaping up nicely for an April 10th peak, in my guess. Should be great for next Saturday.

Awww, disappointed in Mother Nature! Doesn't she know we have an agenda? However a Cherry Blossom bud shoot doesn't have the same appeal as a Cherry Blossom flower shoot!

Did some Recon this morning. Parked along Constitution ave in the shadow of of the Washington Monument. Walk down 17th Street past the WW2 memorial. Lots of good opportunities for photos along the way. Plenty of parking there until 7am but its a good walk to MLK. Note no blossoms open but the buds look ready to burst any day, Saturday might be that day. Will check again on friday.

Next week would probably be best

Next week anytime is better than Saturday/tomorrow for me. I can go mid-week if that's when the blooms look good. Have you guys looked up the cherry blossom cam? Live streaming of the tidal basin and the like.

I think we should postpone if no blossoms in sight yet.

Just got in from the waterfront. Not much change from Wed, still just buds but not as tight. Checked down Hains Point & around MLK, same. Several groups are looking at next week as well. Will be back out Monday am and check again.

Ha! You will have to pay me back then. ;-)

I have always been able to find parallel parking along Ohio Drive SW up near the Lincoln Memorial at that hour. After you park, walk toward the Lincoln Memorial then turn right on Independence toward the Tidal Basin and you will see the MLK Memorial. It will be Cherry Blossom time though, so I'm not totally sure what to expect in terms of availability. There are also a few parking lots along Ohio Drive SW, but it's kind of a hike to the Tidal Basin from there.
