Assuming someone is coming at it from the Sysadmin world.

Not trying to disregard your suggestion Dan. Just saying that someone coming from the .Net development world (or many other worlds) is not likely to have much sysadmin or perl experience.

I taught myself Ruby by replacing a bunch of server automation scripts I had earlier written in Perl.  Sysadmin scripting is a good way to learn pure Ruby without Rails.
