Ive been a php programmer for over 5
years and a ruby programmer for over 2 years (yes Ive switched to
ruby) and the php meetup group would NEVER treat
ANYONE like you all have, very unprofessional.

I want to admonish the list for
the way they've been acting towards this person, and
for the title of this very topic.
I speak at 3-4 conferences a
year, and participate in user groups, online meetups,
and plain old developer chit-chat. One of the topics
that comes up time and time again when discussing the
Ruby and Rails community is the ego and elitism of
said developers. I know that it's not everyone, but
there's enough high profile individuals who act that
way that it paints the everyone with the same brush.
Attacking a user who has a
business idea because he didn't "approach" you the
right way is a terrible way to build community and the
tech scene in Nashville. I hope you can appreciate how
it makes the people on this list look when they're
seriously considering a topic on how to instruct
potential employers on the proper way to approach an
almighty Rails developer (sarcasm mine). The original
poster might have been a noob, but that's no cause for
treating him that way.
I'd like to remind you that
while we are indeed the doers, and developers, we're
nothing without an idea to implement. Entrepreneurs,
marketers, and business people deserve a place at the
table as much as we do. Continue to act like you have
in this email thread and you'll see your opportunities
for work evaporate because no one will feel
comfortable "approaching" you.
