    Having mastered traversing the domain known in the scientific community as terra firma, the Nashville Hiking Meetup group is now poised to conquer the remaining 70% of the earth’s surface. We will start with a 250 meter stretch of the Cumberland River by vanquishing all who dare oppose us.

    Join your hiking buddies in this dragon boat race to benefit the Cumberland River Compact! Compete against other Nashville teams rowing our butts off!

    Opening Ceremony 8:30 AM
    Races Start at 9:00 AM

    In previous years, Nashville Hiking Meetup has dominated the divisions our boats competed in, and this year we're bringing home the gold! Voted the Best Team Building Event by the Nashville Scene, race in this high energy paddling event for some friendly competition and team building, while bringing awareness to our Cumberland River and a healthier river ecosystem.


    Teams of 21 people (we need 20 paddlers plus a drummer) will race along the Cumberland and need your help to cheer them along. Bring your friends and family down for a fun day celebrating our wonderful Cumberland River. Opening ceremony at 8:30. Races begin at 9:00 with the Grand Championship Finale at approximately 3:45.

    Signing up and paying here does not guarantee you a spot on a boat. Depending on how many people sign up, we may not have an even number of folks for one or two boats. If we have to drop people you will get a full refund.

    Unfortunately it doesn't appear we're going to have enough people signed up to staff a full boat crew by the August 21 registration deadline, so this event is cancelled for this year. :(

    I'm cross-posting my response to a question asked on one of the practice invites - hopefully some might find the information handy:

    To describe it at its simplest - dragon boating is a boat of 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steersperson paddling to cross the finish faster than their competition. At the Cumberland River Dragon Boat Festival, each boat crew will compete in 3-4 "heats", with each heat consisting of four boat crews racing each other on a 250m course. Each heat involves approx. a minute and a quarter (less if we're lucky :) of intense physical activity.

    I've put together a web site with some basic information on the physical/training requirements, as well as links to media clips of the required paddling techniques. There's also some video of actual races. Hopefully, that will give you a good idea of what is required to participate. You can reach the web site at .

    Since I haven't heard from anybody who would be able to attend, we won't be meeting this Saturday. I will be scheduling practices and information meetings on 10:00 AM Saturday mornings for the rest of August. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I encourage event participants to attend whenever possible - every bit of practice helps! :)

    Please contact me if Saturday mornings present a problem for you; if enough people have an issue with the timing, I may see about scheduling some weekend evening practices as well.

    If anybody has any questions or would like more information about the event, I'll be attending the Drink-A-Pint event this coming Sunday and will be happy to answer any questions.

Refunds offered if:

  • the Meetup is cancelled
  • the Meetup is rescheduled
  • you can cancel at least 21 day(s) before the Meetup

Additional notes: Depending on how many people sign up, we may not have an even number of folks for two or three boats. If we have to drop people you will get a full refund.

Payments you make go to the organizer, not to Meetup. You must make refund requests to the organizer.
