Swing Dancing at Couchville Lake - Long Hunter State Park

Meeting Time: 7:00 PM
Meeting Place: Area 2 picnic shelter beside Couchville Lake
Hike Distance: None
Estimated Hike Time: 3 hours
Difficulty: Easy
Hike Leader: Ponda

The Civilian Conservation Corps were a major force in building Tennessee State Parks. For recreation back in those days, women were brought in by bus for local dances. During this unique program at Long Hunter State Park, be prepared to step back in time and learn about the history of the park and then how to dance like the stars - or perhaps how the locals did in the 1920s, 30s and 40s.

Ranger Ponda Armstrong, who moonlights as a dance instructor, will provide the music and then show us how to burn up the dance floor with the jitterbug, swing and other similar styles. We'll start the night with a dance lesson from Ranger Ponda and then we'll open up the floor for everyone to dance the night away!

Dancing in the Park is part of Long Hunter's "Friday Night at the Park" series. Other regular Friday night programs include Trivia Night at the Park, Movie Night at the Park & Campfire Night at the Park.

Due to the popularity of this event, we have moved the dance to a roomier setting: outdoors under the Couchville Lake picnic shelter at Area 2. In addition to the dancing, participants should also be able to enjoy the stars in the night sky and the glow of the moon glistening on the lake - not to mention the soothing sounds of frogs, owls, whippoorwills, katydids, and more.

The Couchville Lake picnic shelter has electricity and lights, and also bathrooms, a water fountain, and drink machines. And for those who wish to sit and rest occasionally, there will be picnic tables and benches nearby.

Although open to everyone, this particular program is probably best suited for ages 10 and up. Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing that is suitable for dancing. Even if you're not a dancer, you're welcome to attend as a spectator.

Pets are not allowed in Area 2.

Directions to Couchville Lake Shelter at Area 2:

Enter Long Hunter State Park at the main park entrance (2910 Hobson Pike) and then take the first left (which is Area 2) and proceed to the parking lot. The picnic shelter is beside the Couchville Lake boathouse.

For further directions or park information, call the park office at[masked], or visit the park website at You can also visit the Long Hunter Facebook page for up-to-date park information:

Hey gang, feel free to invite others to tonight's dance - even if they aren't Meetup members. We have plenty of room for this particular event. Also, remember that this event will go on regardless of the weather because it will be under a large shelter.

Can you tell me more about this event, is there a band, recorded music, there an instructor teaching? Any further details would be great! Thanks.

Robert, there will not be a band - it will be a wide variety of recorded music. Yes, there will be an instructor teaching beginning at 7; after about an hour of instruction, it will be open dancing for the rest of the evening.
