Mt. Cammerer Sunrise Hike

Dates: April 11-13
Estimated Drive Time One Way: 3.5 hours

Hike Distance: TBD

Difficulty: Difficult

Hike Leader: Mike Hicks

Join us for a weekend of camping and hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We are planning to hike from Cosby Campground at ~2:00 AM to be on the Mt. Cammerer Watchtower for sunrise.

Here is a trail map of the planned route for Mt. Cammerer:

There may be an additional hike on Saturday and/or Sunday morning to be chosen based on group interest and time. Note that the Cosby campground, like all Smokies campgrounds, has restrooms but no showers.

Many of us will be at sites in the B-loop near the trail head. There are some reservable sites in the A loop, but most sites in the campground are on a first-come-first-serve basis for $14.00/night. For campsite info please check link below:

http://www.recreation.gov/camping/Cosby_Campground/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=70960

Because space at the site is limited, please sign up only if you intend to do the hike with us, so that there is plenty of room for those who want to experience this stellar hike.

*Additional Details

You’ll be on your own for food: please bring breakfasts that can be prepared quickly, since we’ll be hitting the trail early on Saturday, and lunches that can be packed for the trail. Dinners can be prepared at leisure in camp. Bear rules apply in camp (no food left out overnight or while we are away hiking).

No dogs, please, as they are not allowed on the trails.

This event will only allow you to RSVP for one guest. If you wish to bring more guests, please have them register on the site and RSVP for themselves.

There will be no designated carpool, since people tend to leave at different times on Friday. Please feel free to use the "Talk About this Meetup" space below to communicate with each other and arrange carpools.

B-88 through B-92 are the sites closest to the trail head. They are at the very top of the campground. I am hoping to get some of these!

Looking at the Cosby Campground map, the best campsites for hitting the low gap trail are B86-92. Those or others nearby should be the ones we try to get. Trying to get close to the trail connection so we don't disturb other campers at 2 in the morning.
