March 2013 meetup

Anyone can come; no prerequisites.
Half of the time will be presenter led learning; half will be broken into small groups for coding

I will be teaching half of the teaching time expanding the flickr clone app started in the Feb meeting. Jeff Felchner will be teaching half of the teaching time on writing a gem.

Josh Crews builds learning opportunities into the session. Jeff Felchner presented a "how to' on Gems. Adam Scott and Rian Rainey of Centresource answered my questions during the gems breakout. Learning something new every time!!

Thanks Jeff and Josh! I was able to turn some of my dormant ruby code into a gem. My gem calculates the total amount to charge customers if you use Square and don't want to eat the processing fees. https://rubygems.org/gems/square-charger

It was fun being part of the packed house tonight. Looking forward to being a regular NRB attendee. Thanks for making this happen, Josh!

Someone asked me a question at the meetup, and I want to share my answer with everyone:

Q: So what's the point behind making this very simple photo uploading app?

A: I want each person to catch a vision that will inspire/motivate you while learning Rails. That vision is, "What we've built so far wasn't that hard, and with a couple modifications I could really use that in my real life/work".

It might be building your own blog, your own shared task list, your own place for posting reports, or work files, or creating groups that manages a club you are in-- something that a simple Rails app can handle, and you begin to see "the light" that it's something that you could build, even if it takes a few days of making a lot of mistakes.

So that's the point of our simple photo app-- that you see in it something not that different that you want to build for yourself and inspired to try to build it on your own.

Some of the commands I'm probably going to use to get to a starting point in the rails lesson (all in the terminal on a mac)

    gem install rails
    rails new flickr
    cd flickr
    rails generate scaffold Photo name:string
    rake db:migrate
    rails server

Josh, do you have a link to an install tutorial for ruby on rails for OS X?
I've gotten a new MBP since the last meeting, and have not installed RoR on this machine yet. I would love to tackle this before the group tonight if possible.

Can't wait! NSS student on the verge of diving into the Ruby portion of our class, so this group is just what the doc ordered.
