Calling all Animal Rescue Supporters! This is our first opportunity to organize for a humane cause! Let's raise awareness of big top cruelty! Together we can facilitate education and awareness about the tortuous practices routinely used by Ringling including capturing baby elephants rodeo-style to pull them away from their mothers, excessive force, ropes, chains, electric shock prods, and bullhooks to force baby elephants to perform difficult and confusing tricks. I will work to secure our permit with the city and organize the meeting details so we’re ready to go at the end of January. We may be new and still small in numbers, but let’s peacefully rally to show Ringling that we can be a powerful force for good and right on behalf of all animals in Nashville! Save the dates, grab your friends and your humane allies and let’s get out the bodies in support of this important cause!!

I can come @ 5:45 - 7 to pass out leaflettes. I assume that we will gather at the entrance to the arena?

In the description above, on this Meetup page, the link to the Facebook page is not working. If you copy that link without the http colon slash slash in front, I think it will at least be readable.

Hi all! Thanks so much for standing up for abused animals. Ringling is a horrible organization. I work for PETA and will address any questions you may have.

Good input from all in this comment string. I wanted to respond to the mention of PETA. I understand that PETA has a controversial reputation among some people. With that said, this event is about bringing critical awareness to a dire situation – a situation that PETA investigations have done a lot to highlight. They’ve been vocal and active in this initiative and I believe that some people will always consider any challenge to an American institution like the circus – radical, no matter who is articulating the challenge. I think you’re right, Susan, PETAs involvement may discourage some potential participants and some in the public from engaging. However, on the plus side, their presence will certainly encourage more event publicity than we could get on our own and they will help with overall event coverage – something we could not do on our own effectively. I think they will be valuable partners in this effort and I do hope that it won’t deter anyone from participating.

Darn, I got the date wrong. I thought that was this coming weekend. ... Hey, most of us can't be there for the ENTIRE weekend. Are we going to narrow it down to just a couple of hours?

Oh, I hadn't noticed that. Yes, she did mention it. But we don't need a permit if we're standing on the public sidewalk and we're not interfering with vehicular or pedestrian traffic. And a permit won't help any if we're standing on a private sidewalk.

I'll have to ask Laura about that. She was looking into it, I believe. But either way I think it has been taken care of.

Petco in Hermitage is looking for a rescue group to bring dogs to four "5th Saturday" adoption events during 2013. The group I volunteer with is unable to do it, but this might work for someone else. Petco is great to work with and has grants for their rescue partners. Contact Faith Andrews (615)[masked]

Thanks for the notice, Susan. I know of a group that may be interested and will pass this on.
