The level of experience is great. Beginners are encouraged to step out and participate. There are no egos. There is only support. Experienced writers were also challenged and supported. This is a place for all.

  • The Nashville Writers Meetup Group

People give and take observations and suggestions about how to improve poetry honestly, for the most part without being mealy-mouthed, and generally have fun doing so. There are no imposed requirements for attendance. Nobody is forced to read or write or speak. Any attendee may do as many or as few of these as he or she is willing to. If one never writes or says anything, the group won't dismember you.

  • The Nashville Writers Meetup Group

The poetry section has attracted a great group of regulars. It's not necessary to agree with every opinion; you take what you can use, and leave the rest. If you can't handle honesty, and you're just looking for a hoorah, and a pat on the back no matter what you write, you might not like it, because you will always get honesty from these people. The goal of this group is to help you improve your talent, and that can't happen if you don't get honest opinions. It's great fun, so come have some fun while you get better at what drives you. It's always great to be with people who understand that drive. :-)

I am more of the fiction writer, so I went to the this meeting for my best friend who is heavy into memoir writing. I never thought I'd get so much information from such great people. The group was very laid back but not laying down. People should come for the informative information, and stay for the friendship.

because they have poetry they would like to have critiqued moving toward improvement OR because they have mad critiquing skills, but definitely not because they want to wear a beret and have others fawn all over you. we may (ok, we do) snicker at that kind of behavior.

  • The Nashville Writers Meetup Group

It is always good to network with others who have the same interest as you do. Attending the meetings will help you to tighten up on your craft as a writer. I would especially recommend new writers to participate. If for no other reason, to be encouraged. "You will learn something." Also, do keep a open mind when your book is being critiqued. Try to accept the pointers as a assistant to helping you to become a better writer. The bottom line...if you believe in your project, then that is what matters most. Hey I have copyrights and I am still learning.

    Cherra L. on Aug 8, 2009.

  • The Nashville Writers Meetup Group

Well, it helps if you're crazy but that is not a requirement. Seriously, it is helpful to get critiqued by other practicers of your craft. I learned a lot in just one short meeting. Further, I met some really nice people who are also writers. It is completely casual and unstructured, one might even say riotous. One might, but I wouldn't. The meeting place is real nice, too. It has food and drink and more books than you could read in a week. Parking spaces are kind of hard to come by. I saw one guy being taken away in an ambulance hand his will to a person in a car nearby and all the other drivers let that driver take the parking place the ambulance left. I'm not sure but I think that person just inherited that parking place. I know I saw a guy sitting in a car in one space shaving with an electric razor plugged in to the lighter socket. He then handed it to a woman and she did under her arms. She started to do something else with it but I had to leave just then. But not to worry.

not much to say from the initial meet and greet, but the Artist's Way promises to be an enriching process to creativity. 14 years ago, I completed 2 of the 12 week process. I hated to end it. I have no idea why i never picked it up since then. perhaps being part of a group will be the encouragement i need to succeed in this journey. That was mid August. now late september brings the continued excitement and the true revelations. I anticipate continued success.

Everyone is so passionate about writing - their own and everyone elses! I learn great tips through the converation and find everyones story so interesting. I look forward to the meetings every month. I would like to see a bit more structure - as in so many minutes dedicated to specific topics or success stories and how they did it kind of thing (much like last night)... and maybe limiting the introductions to a minute each. I like the idea of people posting what they've written and asking for feedback. It may bring a few more topics of discussion to the surface. Happy writing!

  •  This is a group for people really committed to improving their writing---for people already writing for a while. It's not really for beginners. We'll be delving deeply into distinct aspects of the craft of writing. Right now, we're working on characterization. All members who attended last night's first meetup decided to continue with characterization as our topic again for next month.

  •  This group has a wide variety of genres, publishing goals, and marketing approaches. It was encouraging to listen to other writers talk about their process last night. With ideas on graphic art, web publishing, marketing children's books, pros and cons of documentary vs "mock"-umentary, along with research methods and legal complications...I left with a lot of food for thought. And I must say it was refreshing to hear other people say "I love the library." LOL Let's all put our phones on vibrate next time and step away from the table before beginning a phone conversation. I have responsibilities that will require me to have access to my phone during meetings, so I understand that need. But I missed part of a reading due to a phone conversation going on next to me. I look forward to hearing about everyone's progress next month. -Virginia
